Volvo v70 1999 tailgate won't open

My tailgate slammed shut and now the latch won't disengage. I have removed the interior panel and can get my thumb on the lever which should disengage the latch but it doesn't seem to travel far enough down to release the latch. If I could remove the mechanism which links the electric lock controller, manual lock linkage and interior and exterior release levers I might have a better chance at seeing what the problem is but I can't figure out how to remove this mechanism.
Any help will be appreciated.

My friend came from the airport and thru his bag in the back.

I noticed when we were driving that the tailgate open light was on.

He got out and reclosed the door on my V70.

But when we got home, found that the original reason the dooor did not close was because his luggage strap was in the way.

Now the strap is trapped and I cannot get the door open.

I had the same problem on my '98 V70 - my rear liftgate would not open. The "rear lift door open light" was on. I guess it was some kind of electronic problem in the locking mechanism. But it could have been something else like the metal bar that extends from the outside handle down to the mechanism had slipped off (unusual design seems like it should be connected instead of just sitting on a plastic latch handle) or maybe it was bent because this car had been hit in the rear as I found out looking around in there. Anyway, I took off the interior panel and inside handle. There was a large torx bolt that had to be removed if I was going to replace the mechanism. I later found out that there were two more once I got the gate open. I took a photo of the way everything was connected so I would have a record just in case I needed it. I bought a new lock mechanism. There is a thin piece of plastic down near the bottom on the mechanism that somewhat blocks a screwdriver or other tool from reaching in and opening the door that way. So I had to start removing things. I disconnected the power first. I removed the two screws I could reach which let the part that was connected to the connector be removed out of the way. I removed the metal bars that went from the outside door handle and the lock down to the mechanism. I still couldn't reach where I needed to. So since I had the part I began to slowly break away pieces from the mechanism. They are plastic so they broke off without much trouble but it did take a little work. Finally I reached down to the thin plastic part I referred to earlier that covers the part that unlocks your liftgate and pulled it enough off of it to get access to the release. One last try with a screwdriver let me push the actual release and the door opened! There was much rejoicing. Then I removed the old and replaced with the new. Reconnected everything checked and rechecked. It's working so far. That's how I did it.

Rear hatch on my 2001 explorer will not open, rear window will but tailgate hatch will not. how do i open it with out the unlock button, no manual release that i can see...

I had a clip break when I tried to open my tailgate. I had to remove my inside hatch panel and find my way to the handle assembly. A little plastic clip (shaped like a T) had finally worn out, which wouldn't hold the locking arms, and I had to go to a Ford dealership for a $3 part; tailgate has worked fine since then!

The latch on my 2003 liberty renegade is in the lock position and the glass is open. I have tried everything that I can think of. I have opened and shut the tailgate at least a dozen times any suggestions?

There is a very small switch mounted to the back of the tailgate handle, you will need to remove the interior tailgate panel to access it, the switch is what releases the glass when you pull the handle. most likely the switch has failed. Recall # D16 was issued several years ago for replacement of this switch. Your local dealership should be able to relace it at no cost to you.

Tailgate on 96runner won't 0pen. Window works, fuses ok, latch won't engage to open tailgate

You are gonna have to remove the interior panel, and with pliers, open the hatch...either the clip is broken on the handle or the handle itself is broken.

Tailgate won't open

jg-demedina- 2 solutions 1. remove all screws including 2 screws mounting interior pull handle, then remove the interior panel by steadily pulling away the panel. You will hear the panel clips popping as you pull away the panel. Some of the clips will break...but not to worry...50 cents a clip at the Chrysler dealer. This panel comes away from the interior of the door just like every other panel does on every other car! 2. Do not take the advice of this person you are calling a mechanic.

2003 Ford Explorer back door latch will not open

Mine just did the exact same thing. The latch may be moving freely because it is not hooked to the latching mechanism anymore. In my case, the handle had broken where the handle hooks to the rod that operates the mechanism. Go to the Ford dealer and buy a new handle. Here in S.C. it was $24. You can't get this at the parts houses. Start by removing the plastic "Ford" cover that is over the liscense plate lights. You then have to remove the aluminum rivets that hold the handle to the tailgate from the outside and remove the broken latch. Remove the pull handle loop on the interior side of the tailgate (2 screws), unsnap the inside plastic tailgate interior panel, and pull down the black plastic sheeting that is underneath the panel to make access to the mechanism inside of the tailgate. There is also a hard plastic cover that you will see that needs to be pulled loose to open another access hole. Install the new tailgate latch handle by sliding back into the mounting holes and attach with two 10-32 screws and nuts. The new handle will come with a new yellow rod attachment piece on the handle. You will see inside of the tailgate a small rod hanging down, most likeky it will have the same rod attachment piece as the one on the new handle. Note the position of the yellow piece on the rod, as you will connect the new piece in the same place. Once the rod is hooked up, relubricate the metal mechanism with a light machine oil, replace the black plastic cover, replace the black plastic sheeting, (secure with a small amount of duct tape), replace the tailgate interior panel, replace the pull handle loop, shut tailgate, replace "Ford" cover over lights, and you're done!
