Replace the clock spring, or check all the cabling and plugs first. If you are inexperienced take it to an auto electrician, otherwise do it yourself but disconnect the negative battery terminal for 2 minutes prior to opening the steering wheel to check the plugs, as not doing so could cause the airbag to go off. In addition you can also take out the airbag fuse. Check radio control plugs and close it up again and reconnect everything in reverse order. If that doesn't fix it, then have the clock spring replaced professionally, its too much mucking around if you don't know what you're doing.

Replace the Clock spring. It is mounted behind steering wheel. It alows electrical connection while the wheel turns.

So after you push the button and then press the set button in the steering wheel it does not get into cruise control ? It sounds like a minor electrical problem. If you have warranty still I think the dealership should fix it for free.
Sorry i have not been able to help you.
SOURCE: Steering wheel lamps do not work (radio controls, temp, cruise)
The lights on the steering wheel are in the switches. To fix the lights, the whole switch needs to be replaced. Same thing goes for the Tempature Controls and radio. Overall, I think it would be very expensive to replace all of the switches to get the lights working. I have the same vehicle, and almost all of the lights are out.
I think the lights behind the gage controls are replaceable, although you still have to rip out most of the dash to get to them.
I have the auto-sense wipers, so I was leaving the wipers on all the time, and the would only work when needed. The bad part I finally found out about this was that while the wiper switch is on (even though they were not wiping), it caused all of the dash lights, switch lights and rear parking light to be on. I think this alone significantly cut down on the life of the bulb.
For now, I am just living without the lights. The temperature control is very expensive (just the part alone).
You can usually find the best price for these things at http://www.rockauto.com
SOURCE: Speedometer/odometer/cruise control isn't working.
It's your speed sensor at the transfercase on the drivers side i believe. Check the wire and clip to the sensor for any break or loose contacts.
Easy fix and is about a 30 min job to do with simple tools.
Un-clip the wire conntection, remove the retainer bolt and slide and sensor out. To install just do everything in reverse and add transmisson oil if needed.
Most of the time, it's going to be the sensor. Keep in mind that there are two sensor's so make sure it's the one on the output shaft at the transfercase. The other one is closer to the front of the transmission on the same side with is the input Volosity speed sensor.
If it was your ABS sensor, you ABS light would come on in your dash.
Good luck and hope this helps

Thanks for all the replies. It was the clock spring. Auto electrician did the job. When he locked the steering left the audio controls came on. Bad connection so needed new unit,. All good in the Pathfinder world again.
