I have a '02 Buick Century with 309,000 miles. I have had a vibation for a few years now. The front end has been totally redone, both axles, ball joints, motor mounts, transmission mounts, new tires, hub assembly. I believe it had something to do with the transmission, so had it rebuilt with the mechanic saying the vibration being caused by a worn torque converter, Although he said he replaced everything, another mechanic said they onlyreplaced the soft parts, and not the hard parts, thus no bearings, etc. Problems persists after $2000.I have a '02 Buick Century with 309,000 miles. I take it that this is a Ford car in which case I doubt very much that it has king pins in the front end. It will have either an upper and lower ball joints in control arms or a lower ball joint on the end of a strut. Ford ball joints are riveted in from factory and the rivets have to drilled out and the new ball joints will have the correct bolts to replace the rivets IN the case of a strut the lower ball joint is replaced as above and the strut will have a replaceable insert in it that you can remove and fit a new insert in place . Ford stopped using king pins when they gave away "I" beam front axles .
Mr.Mangus have you checked at all your front suspension struts, shock absorbers,or lower wishbones with bushing and ball joints? I had recently a diesel ford focus 2007 with similar case and both front wishbones were replaced due to ball joints and bushes and then sent for steering alignment. Vehicle drive excellent. Please check.
remove the wheel. then take out the lower ball joint bolt.remove the tie rod from the assembly this makes it easy to swing the assembly back and forth. using a ball joint fork insert it between the the ball joint and lower control arm and wack the end on it till the ball joint separates from the control arm. using a pry bar put it thru the control arm so you can pry down on the control arm to release the ball joint then towards the back of the control arm are 2 nuts remove these and remove the cap that they hold towards the front of the control arm is one more nut remove this one and then pull out the control arm replace in reverse order
The easiest way is too remove the whole knuckle and remove the joint on a bench. The Ball Joint is in the knuckle, not in the lower control arm. Try to not break pinch bolt on lower strut clamp. Hope this helps.. :-) Cobra
First make an appointment for a front end alignment which will be required after replacing the ball joint. Securely support the vehicle under the lower control arm at the outer end, the end nearest the tire. The upper ball joint is attached to the upper control arm with 2 large nuts. Under the nuts are cams with hex heads for adjusting caster and camber. Mark the position of these cams in a way that will allow you to reinstall them somewhere near the same position. Next remove the outer end of the joint from the steering knuckle an then remove the 2 nuts and both cams from the control arm end. Reinstall and get that alignment asap !
if you dont have a ball joint press and dont know how to use one then dont do it, but if you do its not that bad of a job just jack the truck up under the control arm remove the brake rotor then take the lower ball joint nut off then use a pickle fork to break the ball joint loose then take the axle nut off push the axle out of the bearing and use the ball joint press to remove and replace the ball joint
Before servicing the vehicle refer to the precautions at the beginning of this section.
Raise and support the vehicle.
Prior to carrying out any inspection of the ball joints inspect the wheel bearing.
Have an assistant pull inward and outward on the top and the bottom tire. Mount a suitable dial indicator and measure the movement between the ball joint and the lower arm. If the movement is at or exceeds 0.03 in. (0.75 mm) install a new ball joint.
