SOURCE: There is a leak in the muffler and it is making a loud noise.

The first pipe is the downpipe off the manifold. Look on Ebay motors for the best deals.

My muffler is loud

Do people hear your vehicle coming down the street before they can actually see it? This can be an embarrassing situation. A muffler that is suddenly noisy is often caused by the driver hitting something while on the road, damaging the exhaust system. Rust can also be a culprit of holes in the muffler, resulting in a noisy muffler which gets progressively worse as the holes get bigger.
Exhaust systems in newer vehicles may now last well over 100,000 miles without causing any concerns. But because the exhaust system is exposed to the conditions of the road, damage may occur without warning. The parts of the exhaust system that can be damaged include:
  • Manifold
  • Pre-catalytic converter
  • Front pipe
  • Catalytic converter
  • Intermediate exhaust pipe
  • Front muffler
  • Rear exhaust pipe
  • Rear Muffler
If you do hear a loud noise and you suspect it is the exhaust system, be sure to keep fresh air coming into the vehicle and don't sit in the car while it's idling. If there is a leak, carbon monoxide, a toxic gas, can get into the interior of the car. There is no distinguishing odor so it is easy to be overcome by it.
In order for your vehicle to keep running smoothly, all of its components need to be in good working order. Taking the time for regular car inspections and keeping up with needed repairs is the best way to ensure that everything is working as it should. This inspection should include the exhaust system.
"Why is my muffler so loud?" For an answer to your question, contact our ASE Certified technicians at Dependable Car Care for more information and to schedule an inspection of your exhaust system. Our auto shop proudly serves residents in the community of Ventura, CA, and the surrounding area.

Last time. I have Ford focus 2003 sedan dohc 2L. I lost a part from exhaust system. from back to front I see 1. tail pipe 2. rectangular box shaped part? Lunch Box? 3. missing part Muffler?

Starting from the front, coming off the exhaust manifold should have, 1. Exhaust pipe, 2. Catalytic converter, 3. Exhaust pipe, 4. Resonator, 5. Tail pipe. Also, there should be an Oxygen sensor somewhere around the catalytic converter.

How do you take the muffler off

On most cars, if it is the original muffler, it will be welded into the exhaust system. You would need to cut the muffler out of the system with a pipe cutter, hacksaw, or torch to remove it. Aftermarket mufflers are installed with clamps. Those must be removed in order to remove the muffler. Even then, the clamps will crimp the pipes together and you often have the chisel the muffler collars off the exhaust pipe to remove.

Why is my car riding hard. I just had the complete exhaust system replaced on my 99 intrigue and instead of the dual exhaust muffler the mechanic put a single exhaust muffler on it and now the car is...

its important to have the right amount of backprettiar in your exhaust, so if going from 2 mufflers and 2 pipes to a single one would need to enlarge the size of the pipe to compansate. or it wont breath right and end up gutless.

My car sounds like a motor cycle is it a problem with the muffler?

Easiest way to find out is to put the car on jacks or ramps. Then roll under and examine your exhaust system. It could be your muffler, exhaust pipe, or catalyic converter. More than likely its a hole in the exhaust pipe before the muffler or your muffler has seperated from the rest of the exhaust.

Hi, my name is Brittney, and I have a 2005 ford focus zx4, when starting my car and pressing on the gas pedal it makes a really loud noise, almost sounnding like a harley. Sometimes I could even smell the...

Your exhaust system is subjected to all kinds of road debris and, depending on where you live, winter road salt. If the hole is in the pipe, a good muffler shop could cut out the bad area and weld in a fresh length of pipe. It it's the muffler, it's a simple muffler replacement. Unless the whole exhaust pipe is bad, don't pay for a whole new pipe. Whatever you decide to do, don't wait too long. The exhaust fuems you smell are only part of the problem. What yo can't smell is carbon monoxide, and it is deadly.

I have 96 Caprice Classic...muffler has begun making quite a throaty rumble...I took to Monro Muffler...they said I need to replace from Manifold all the way to back....they want some $600. Anybody have...

I can't see your exhaust system, but I do recommend that you have them show you the "why" of it. Generally the front pipe and the cat last a long time and generally don't need to be replaced very often. If the flanges are rusted and have failed there are "wrap around" replacements that can be used without pipe replacement. Most common is to change everything from the cat back. As I said, have them actually show you what is wrong...or take it to another shop and without telling them the original findings, have them look at it!!! Since there is very little involved except a visual inspection, most shops will not charge or will charge very little for this.
