Audi TT HID bulb needs replacing

Is there a way to replace the HID bulb in my 2005 Audi TT without taking the bumper off? It is the passenger side bulb and the dealer wants $400 just to change a bulb! Any help is appreciated.

You can change the bulb easily yourself in about five minutes, especially on the passenger side. You may want to disconnect the battery, though I don't know if that is necessary. You may also want to handle the bulbs wearing latex or nitrile gloves so as to not get your skin oil on the glass.

1. Remove the decorative cover that conceals the Coolant reservior. There is a single philips screw near the firewall that holds the cover down.

2. Find the back of the headlight and pull the metal wire clip that holds the back of the headlight cover toward the engine. Remove the cover.

3. Look inside and find the back of the HID bulb--it will be toward the outside fender. Twist the connector until it separates.

4. There is a retainer ring that holds the bulb in. Again, twist that until it comes loose. The bulb should come right out.

5, Put the new bulb in, noticing the notch is on top. Also, attach the retainer ring. It is marked "Top" to help orient it. Reattach the connector with a twist.

6. Make sure everything is firmly in place. Reconnect your battery and test the lights. Finish putting anything else back on.

Good luck.

Also, the bulb you need is a D2S at around 4200 degrees Kelvin. You can search on ebay and find them WAY CHEAPER than the dealer will charge. I got a pair of two for $68 shipped where the dealer will charge $150-$200 for just the bulb.

Changing a headlight bulb 2002 Lexus SC430.

Question edited for clarity

Not easy as it is HID. It is not normally the bulb, but the transformer unit. Details in the link.

Yes, it CAN be done without pulling the bumper, fender and entire headlight assembly.

I just completed a HID bulb replacement on my 02 SC430. Took about two hours and included a copious amount of swearing. It is a PITB process that is largely done by braille. Sausage fingered individuals should not even try. The clearance is very small - just enough to get your hand into position.

if you google search agains "sc430 headlight service manual" you will find a pdf of the headlight service procedure. I largely followed those instructions, but I have a few hints...

1. Do the passenger side first. Removing the air cleaner gives you some ability to see what you are doing. That lets you learn the process before you go do the driver side "blind".

2. The service manual did not mention a few wires that are present. The leads for the amber indicator light stretches tight across the HID moisture cap. You need to pull the amber indicator bulb assembly first. Fortunately, that is a simple twist and pull. Once the amber lamp was free, I disconnected its harness and set the bulb aside in a safe location.

2b. A pair of wires were physically attached to the HID cover. These make it extremely difficult to maneuver the cover, particularly when putting the cover back on. I ended up physically detaching those wires from the cover permanently. Made life a lot easier and will make replacing the HID bulbs simpler next time.

3. The HID bulb socket easily detaches. The wire spring bale is hinged and won't fly away when you get the two ends free. Those are freed with a squeeze and pull movement. You can do one side at a time.

4. Make certain the spring bale is swung out so it does not impeded placement of the new HID bulb.

5. Because you are doing most of the bulb insertion blind, it is difficult to avoid touching the quartz jacket to something. Practice with the old bulb first. Once in place, you gently rotate the bulb until its notches allow it to seat. You can feel that pretty easily.

I used the "MAXLUX HID Xenon Bulb D2C (D2S/D2R) 5000K" bulbs obtained via amazon. Yes, that price is indeed for a PAIR of bulbs. I thought it was for a single bulb due to the low price and ended up with four bulbs.

The new bulbs light up much brighter than my aging 02 HID bulbs. A slight bluer than the OEM Lexus bulbs, roughly the same color as the HID's on the Aston. Longevity is, of course, yet to be evaluated.

Success. It can be done, but I guarantee a lot of colorful language during the process.

How do i wire up hid headlights on 2005 mazda 3

To wire up an HID kit on the low beams of your Mazda 3 2005, you will need 3-4 things:
1- HID kit (bulbs and ballasts)
2- HID relay (connects your hid kit to your battery)
3- 4700uF capacitor (solves DRL flickering issue)
4- H7 hid bulb adaptor (you can also use the rubber piece that holds the bulb wires as a spacer)

Wiring diagram:
http://www.carsets.co.uk/upload/temp/images/hid-light-installation-photo-display.jpg

Tips on How to wire up:
1. HID bulb's amp wires connects with the ballast's amp wires. (There's only one way to connect them.)
2. The positive and the negative spade connectors from the hid relay connect with your vehicle's low beam connector, closest to your battery: the driver side. The passenger side low beam connector is not used and should be insulated. You can use electric tape.)
3. Each ballast is connected to one of the relay's clip connector, and it's grounded on each side to your vehicle's body. (One connector for each ballast, one for each side. You can use the screw for the body as a ground.)
4. The red wire(with the inline fuse) in the relay connects to your battery's positive terminal.
5. The capacitor sits on the relay switch. (Google for how to wire the capacitor onto the hid relay switch.) dynoxg image
6. The halogen bulb sits on an adapter. You can safely remove them from each other, and use an H7 hid adapter instead.

2005 Lexus RX330 HID ballast replacement, passenger side headlight. What is the removal procedure please?

I have a 2005 Lexus Rx330 with HID AFS headlight. My passenger side light went out. I thought the bulb burnt out, so I bought a new bulb. After replacing the new bulb, it happened exactly like my old bulb. It light up lightly and then total black out. What's wrong with it? I thought the ballast burnt. I called Lexus dealer and asked for the new ballast/transformer. Surprised me, they don't know what is it. They told me they only know the wiring harness and the socket, but not the ballast ??????? Could you tell me what do I need to replace?

Thanks,

I have a Toyota Sienna with factory installed HID headlights (2004). The driver side light will not work and when I took it to the dealer they told me that the headlight computer needed to be replaced. ...

The ECU on my 2004 Sienna passenger HID light went bad due to the condensation in the light, or at least that's what it looked like when I opened it up. The ballast was all corroded. Anyway, I searched and searched online for a way to fix it without paying the dealer $900. I just fixed it today for $92. I got the replacement ballast brand new for $92 shipped from The Retrofit Source at this site: http://www.theretrofitsource.com/product_info.php?cPath=26&products_id=161
Then I searched for an online manual for 2004 Sienna, found that, and went through the procedure of partially removing the bumper cover, taking the screws for the light fixture out, turning it on it's side and replacing the ballast. It took me about 2 hours to do the whole job, and everything works fine.
By the way, I got the part from The Retrofit Source in about 2-3 days without paying any expedited shipping. They were extremely helpful on the phone, delivered earlier than I expected, and saved me $800!!

Same issue

I'm having the same problem wiht my 2004 TT. Luck for me, the problem followed the bulb. I can't answer the question about the ignitor, though replacing it seems to be your fix. The ignitor ain't cheap, but the cheapest place I've found is www.1stvwparts.com. Good luck.

Audit TT passenger headlight goes out

The ignitor or ballast must stay energized for the bulb to stay lit..If the bulb comes on then goes off, or flickers, then the ignitor is defective. You are in the early stages of failure, it will eventually stop working altogether

Changing the computer doesn't sound right. Most likely a bad oil temp sensor. Make sure you are using the recommended weight (synthetic) oil.
