Not too hard at all, even easier if you have it up on a lift. But if I remember right the pan is easy to get to without having to remove anything else. It is a good idea to go ahead and replace the filter while you are there. Make sure you get the rubber seal out of the valve body when you remove the old filter.

SOURCE: 1998 mercury sable how to remove auto transmission

You have to use and engine support bar that hooks across the top of the strut towers like this
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Astro-Pneumatic-5820-Engine-Support-Bar-With-Front-Arm_W0QQitemZ110370058738QQcmdZViewItemQQptZMotors_Automotive_Tools?hash=item110370058738&_trksid=p4506.c0.m245&_trkparms=72%3A1171%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

Then you remove the sub frame under car and remove tranny thru the bottom.

SOURCE: HOW DO YOU DISABLE THE SEAT BELT CHIME ON A 1997 MERCUTY SABLE WA

Q: Are you wearing your seat belt? Yes? No?

A: No.
Solution: Put on your seat belt!!!!!! Save a life!!!

A: Yes.
Soultion: There has to be a fuse either under the dash or under the hood that controlls the chime.
There is a switch in the seatbelt connecter that controlls the chime. It has either failed or the wireing that carried the signal to shut the chime off has been damaged.

SOURCE: Can I replace the transmission fluid in a 2001

Of course you can, in any vehicule either automatic or manual, you can replace the transmission oil easily. The only thing to be sure is to have a new filter and gasket ready to replace the old ones if you have an automatic, and with a manual you usually just drain it and fill it back up since there is usually no filter or pan. And in any case, you need to know just how much oil has to go in it too so that you don't over fill and cause damage, or underfill and also cause damage. If you have no idea how much oil you need, just call up your local dealer, garage or parts store and by telling them what year and model car you have, they will be able to tell you just how much oil you need. Be sure to ask them also what TYPE of oil you need, as it's not the same oil in manual or automatic, and also even in an automatic, most fords need a special type oil, and there are also a few other models like some mitsubishis and BMW and Mercedes and the like which also sometimes need special oils.

first of all, check the kickdown cable to transmission. it may be out of adjustment. or just bad.if its the cable out of adjustment, it is sure cheaper then a tranny.

1997 mercury sable transmission when i try to speedup the car acts lie it has a governor

That is a hard question because of not anything about the history of it ...or the miles on it...However I can tell you that when those cars came out there were quite of few that had transmission problems.I know of at least 10 in a small town..If you think it is the trans I would start by changing fluid and filter in trans..Be sure and put correct amount back in .Dont overfill cause you cant just drain it.See owners manual for capacity..check for metal in pan....If it has a lot of miles it could be wearing out..The ones I spoke of just quit moving...Be sure it is the trans causing the problem..I am sure you have it tuned up...If you can send more info I may can help further.Hope this helps...Metalpoet

Not working

Check the bulbs to see if they're good (rare that both bulbs go at same time). If they're good, check to see if there's power to your sockets.
Under your car on the side of your transmission will be your reverse switch. It will have several wires coming out of it. Most likely the switch has died.

Im thinking of doing a transmission service myself.

it's not hard, but you'll need to count the bolts so that you gwt the right gasket. Undo all the bolts but the rear two corners-loosen these but don't remove. Allow the pan to lean to drain the fluid then remove the pan, replace the filter, replace the gasket, reinstall pan and add tranny fluid to the dipstick.

Slow in reverse, not much power

you will have to get the transmission flushed with new gasket and filter...if that doesnt work you will have to get it overhauled.
