You probably got some electrical componets too wet. Take a good hair dryer(i know it sounds nuts) and follow the wiring harness and dry as you go. If you know what a coil pack looks like I would start there. It's what the spark plug wires hook to. If and when you do get it to start it may run choppy for a bit . Let it run for a while to dry some more of the water off. This happens a lot. You probably didn't hurt anything to bad. When you get it running if you like a clean motor use some teflon spray or what not to water proof the vulnerable electrical systems. So in the future this doesn't happen again. It's happened to me a hundred times. You probably got some electrical componets too wet. Take a good hair dryer(i know it sounds nuts) and follow the wiring harness and dry as you go. Are you sure you use the right type of fluid, and have you let it warm up and checked the level with the engine running? I would only use the recommended oil suggested by BMW. http://www.redlinemotive.com/replacement/bmw/atfluid.asp
Try manually shifting it? Also, is there any chance you disconnected a wire or hose to the transmission valve body when you had the pan off? Or any chance you got some dirt inside?
SOUNDS LIKE YOU NEED A HEAD JOB. CRACKED HEAD OR NEED A HEAD GASKET. CHECK YOUR ENGINE OIL IF IT HAS WATER IN IT OR IF WATER IS LEAKING OUT OF TAIL MUFFLER ITS A CRACKED HEAD. IF NOT ITS HEAD GASKET. ANOTHER THING WHICH COULD BE IS FIRST MAKE SURE THAT THE WATER PUMP IS NOT LEAKING WATER CUZ IF IT IS THEN IT WILL BE THAT. SOMETIMES RUNNING YOUR VEHICLE WITH A BROKE WATER PUMP HEATS UP ENGINE CAUSING HEADS TO CRACK WHEN FILLING WITH WATER BUT USUALLY THE HEAD GASKET GOES FIRST. HOPE THIS HELPS.
Since you said it stalled out first, and then wouldn't start, we would assume that these are related, but not necessarily. If they are related, the bad or discharged battery would not explain both as the alternator would have provided power to keep it running. Loose or corroded battery terminals or wires that provide power to the computer and ignition would. A neutral safety switch that assures that it is in neutral or park may be better or it may not be in neutral or park, again not explaining why it would stall. It is always wise to disconnect the battery cables when spraying your engine compartment. Check your main fuses as they may have blown from the water grounding something out.
If the 93 and the 92 are the same it is easy. Remove the bottom part of the back seat. There is an access panel you have to remove on the passenger side. Then you can access the top of the tank to remove the pump from the tank.
Richard, a 93 BMW 325i has timing chain and not a belt. Unless it has been absolutely neglected in terms of oil changes, the chain should last 2-300k miles
