Car stalls and chugs when not accelerating

Last night my 1998 GrandAm started chugging at stop lights. This morning it started right up but stalls at stops. Chugs like a diesel when idling if I have my foot on the gas. If I dont it will stall and be hard to start. Sounds like a diesel too and it is Not.

Change your distributor and wires. the distibutor cap might have a crack or something in it which will let moisture in it and cause a bad cannection or a miss-rife. i had the same problem with my 87 celica gt after i washed the engine and like a ****** i didnt keep the engine running while doing it. lesson learned.

Check engine light?

  • Anonymous Mar 12, 2009

That's fine, have it scanned for codes. Just ignore the catalytic converter efficiency code and post the other codes.

What could be wrong with my Toyota Echo if the engine chugs while idling, and the car loses power when accelerating (stalling out if accelerating too quickly)?

There are numerous things that will cause this problem. If the check engine light is on, have the codes checked to see if there is a problem the computer has found to cause this issue. Even without the check engine light on, there may be a code stored. You can also do a visual inspection under the hood for any disconnected hoses causing vacuum leaks. These are the best places to begin with diagnostics

Why is my 2001 hyundai elantra is chugging?

You do not find any vehicle problems
guessing or asking someone

You have to do the proper testing of the vehicle

Most people go to a local shop & some throw away
extra money for the same service at a dealer

2006 chrysler sebring chugs wants stall

I doubt it. You should have the computer checked for trouble codes.
It could be a long list of things including low fuel pressure.

Periodically at idle chugs. When trying to rev for more RPMs it almost stalls and takes alot of chugging before it gets back up to proper RPMs in 1st gear.

Does this happen occasionally after a stop? My 02' did this- brake light switch was sticking. I noticed it one night, after the car started chugging, I happened to look in the back window and saw the brake lights were illuminated for a few seconds even though i was totally on the acc.
This was a huge recall- lots of cars involved. Call a stealership and have them run the VIN # to see if you fall into the recall

Car chugs between 5-25 mph

Maybe the fuel u put to your gas tank had some water in it or your fuel filter needs to be changed. When last u changed your fuel filter

Car Shakes a Chugs.

Have your check engine light scanned. Autozone will do it for free. Even if the engine light isn't actively on, it will tell you which codes have been triggered since the last clearing. Following your description, I would suspect damage to your exhaust is damaged. Most likely it is your catalytic converter. They are somewhat fragile due to their design and if you had it high centered on it, the honeycomb may have broken inside it. Just a guess, I'd say a replacement would cost you around $300-$500 installed.
