remove battery terminals to prevent unexpected grounding of wires at starter. Remove wires at starter, taking note of how they are placed on the starter/selonoid... remove starter mounting bolts, remove starter. Get new starter and install same as reverse. Sometimes the starter has exhaust or other things in the way, so you may have to turn the starter just a certain way to remove it. Might have to come out the top, but out the bottom is the most common way to remove the starter. replace battery wires and vroooom.. off you go.

Here's the generic starter replacement directions.
Engine should be cool, parked on level surface. Remove negative cable from battery. Remove electrical connections at starter (Sometimes starter may need to be partially removed to access all electrical connections.) Remove any brackets, parts, or accessories that obstruct access to the starter motor mounting bolts. Remove mounting bolts and remove starter. Clean the mounting surface, and install new starter and tighten the mount bolts evenly. Replace wires on starter. Connect battery.

REMOVAL
Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Remove (UPPER RADIATOR CROSS MEMBER) and relocate (UPPER RADIATOR CROSS MEMBER REMOVED) the upper radiator crossmember, (Refer to 23 - BODY/EXTERIOR/RADIATOR CROSSMEMBER - REMOVAL).
Remove the radiator fan module (FAN MODULE IN VEHICLE) (Refer to 7 - COOLING/ENGINE/RADIATOR FAN - REMOVAL).
Remove the wiring harness clip from front mount.
Remove the coolant line clamp bolt (COOLANT LINE BRACKET).
Remove the upper nut from the front mount (FRONT RUBBER MOUNT UPPER NUT).
Remove the upper starter mounting bolt (UPPER STARTER BOLT).
Remove the middle starter bolt (MIDDLE STARTER BOLT).
Raise vehicle and support.
Remove the lower front mount nut (FRONT RUBBER MOUNT IN POSITION).
Raise and support engine (SUPPORT ENGINE).
Remove the lower bracket bolt to transmission (BRACKET TRANS BOLT).
Remove the lower bracket bolt to engine block (BRACKET ENGINE BLOCK BOLT).
Relocate the front mount and bracket.
Disconnect the positive battery cable from starter
Disconnect the solenoid connector from starter.
Remove the lower starter bolt (STARTER LOWER BOLT).
Remove starter from vehicle.

3.3L Engine

1. Disconnect the negative (-) battery cable. Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle on jackstands. Fig. 1: Disconnect the negative battery cable
   
   
2. Remove the three bolts attaching the starter to the engine/transaxle. Fig. 2: Remove the three starter mounting bolts
   CAUTION
   Be careful when removing the starter motor mounting bolts, the motor can be quite heavy. Personal injury could result if the starter motor falls from its mounting position.
   
3. Remove the starter from the the transmission housing. Position the starter to gain access to the wiring connectors.

5. Disconnect the push on solenoid connector.
6. Remove the starter from the vehicle. To install:
   
7. Clean all wire terminals of dirt, grease or corrosion.
8. Attach the electrical wire connectors and secure with the mounting nuts. Tighten the starter solenoid B+ nut to 90 inch lbs. (10 Nm) and the solenoid wire-to-starter nut to 55 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
9. Hold the starter motor in place, then secure in place with the 3 attaching bolts. Tighten the bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).
10. Lower the vehicle.
11. Connect the negative (-) battery cable.

3.5L Engine

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Raise and support the vehicle.
3. For easier servicing, do not remove the wiring from the starter motor at this time.
4. Remove the three bolts attaching the starter to the engine. Fig. 4: Remove the three bolts attaching the starter to the engine
   
   
5. Remove the starter solenoid assembly from the transfer housing. Position the starter to gain access to the wiring connectors.
6. Remove the battery positive cable nut from starter and remove the cable.
7. Disconnect the push on solenoid connector.
8. Remove the starter from the vehicle. To install:
   
9. Clean all wire terminals of dirt, grease or corrosion.
10. Attach the electrical wire connectors and secure with the mounting nuts. Tighten the starter solenoid B+ nut to 90 inch lbs. (10 Nm) and the solenoid wire-to-starter nut to 55 inch lbs. (6 Nm).
11. Hold the starter motor in place, then secure in place with the 3 attaching bolts. Tighten the bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (54 Nm).

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable at the battery.
2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
3. Remove the electrical connections from the back of the starter.
4. Remove the bell-housing cover.
5. Remove the starter support bracket bolt from the engine block.
6. Unfasten the starter motor-to-engine bolts, then carefully lower the starter.
7. Remove the nuts/bolts that hold the starter support bracket to the starter. To install:
   
8. Transfer the starter support bracket to the new starter if the starter is being replaced.
9. Raise the starter into position and secure the starter using the starter motor-to-engine bolts. Tighten the bolts to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
10. Install the starter support bracket-to-engine bolt to 24 ft. lbs. (32 Nm).
11. Install the bell-housing cover.
12. Install the starter electrical connections on the back of the starter. Tighten the "S'' terminal to 22 inch lbs. (2.5 Nm) and the battery terminal to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
13. Carefully lower the vehicle, then connect the negative battery cable.

2.3L (VIN D) and 2.4L (VIN T) Engines Fig. 10: When installing the starter, tighten the mounting bolts to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm) on the 2.3L and 2.4L engines

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable at the battery.
2. Detach the air inlet duct from the throttle body.
3. Remove the top starter bolt.
4. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
5. Remove the lower starter retaining bolt.
6. If necessary, position the engine wiring harness aside.
7. Position the starter to enable access to the solenoid wiring, then detach the wiring.
8. Remove the starter from the vehicle. To install:
   
9. Raise the starter to the vehicle, then attach the wiring.
10. Position the starter, then secure using the lower starter bolt. Tighten to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm)
11. If moved, reposition the engine wiring harness.
12. Carefully lower the vehicle.
13. Install the top starter bolt, then tighten to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm).
14. Fasten the air inlet duct to the throttle body.
15. Connect the negative battery cable.

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove air intake resonators.
3. Remove starter motor upper mounting bolts.
4. Raise and support the vehicle.
5. Remove the nuts on the starter terminals and remove the cables from the terminals.
6. Remove the two starter lower retaining bolts and remove the starter.

To install:

1. Place the starter into position and tighten the 2 lower retaining bolts to 15-20 ft. lbs (20-27 Nm).
2. Place the starter cables onto the terminals and tighten the retaining nuts to 80-124 inch lbs. (5-7 Nm).
3. Lower the vehicle.
4. Install and tighten the upper retaining bolt to 15-20 ft. lbs (20-27 Nm).
5. Install the air intake resonators.
6. Connect the negative battery cable.

2.5L Engine

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the engine air cleaner assembly.
3. Remove the fuel feed and return lines from the support bracket located on the accelerator cable bracket, and remove the fuel line bracket.
4. On vehicles equipped with a automatic transaxle, remove the gear selector and the gear shift cable bracket from the transaxle.
5. Remove the air cleaner support bracket from the engine and transaxle mount.
6. Remove the nuts on the starter terminals and remove the cables from the terminals.
7. Remove the starter motor-to-transaxle case retaining bolt at the rear of the starter.
8. Remove the two starter retaining bolts and carefully lift the starter from the transaxle case while disengaging the alignment pins.

To install:

1. Position the starter onto the alignment pins and onto the transaxle case.
2. Install the two starter retaining bolts and the rear retaining bolt and tighten them to 15-21 ft. lbs. (21-29 Nm).
3. Place the starter cables onto the terminals and tighten the retaining nuts to 80-124 inch lbs. (5-7 Nm).
4. Install the air cleaner support bracket.
5. If removed, install the gear shift selector and bracket.
6. Install the fuel line bracket and install the fuel lines in the bracket.
7. Install the air cleaner assembly.
8. Connect the negative battery cable.

Removal
1. Disconnect negative battery cable. Raise and support vehicle. As required, remove nuts from A/C
compressor, exhaust system and/or engine braces, adjacent to starter. On M/T models, remove bending
brace from around starter (if equipped). On all models, remove other items that may interfere with
removal of starter.
2. If necessary, remove nut from engine cross brace. Using pry bar between upper engine mount and engine,
pry rearward and support engine.
3. If necessary, remove oil filter, air induction tube and cooling fan. Remove flywheel inspection cover (if
equipped). Remove starter solenoid terminal "S" nut and battery cable nut. Separate wiring from starter.
Remove starter mounting bolts. Remove shims and note arrangement for reassembly. Remove starter.
Installation
Before installing starter onto engine, tighten inner solenoid terminal nuts to ensure they are secure in cap.
Starter failure may occur due to terminal or cap damage. Install starter and wiring. Ensure shims are installed in
original location.

1. Note the radio security code, and then disconnect the battery ground cable.
2. Raise and safely support the front of the vehicle with jackstands.
3. If installed, remove the lower engine shield.

NOTE The engine must be supported on 1990-97 Passat models as the starter mounting bolts also support the engine-to-transmission mounting surface.

1. If necessary, label the small wires before disconnecting them.

3. On Audi A4 and 1998-00 Passat models:
1. Release the number 50 electrical connector from the starter.
2. Then remove the nut for the large battery cable and remove the cable.
3. Loosen then remove the clamp that secures the heat shield to the starter.
4. Remove the fasteners securing the bracket at the front of the starter and remove the bracket.


4. Remove the starter mounting bolts, while supporting the weight of the starter.
5. Pull the starter straight out from the transaxle.

To install:

NOTE On vehicles with a manual transaxle, there is a bushing where the starter shaft fits into the bell housing. If the shaft or bushing is worn or if the starter has been jamming, the bushing should be replaced. There is a special bushing removal tool available but a small inside bearing removal tool is usually sufficient.

1. Install the starter into the transaxle.
2. Tighten the related starter motor fasteners as follows:
3. Starter support bracket, M5 nut: 35 inch lbs. (4 Nm)
4. Starter support bracket, M8: 16 ft. lbs. (22Nm)
5. Battery cable to solenoid, M8 nut:10 ft. lbs. (13Nm)
6. hydraulic hose support bracket, M8: 84 inch lbs. (10Nm)
7. Starter mounting fasteners, M10: 44 ft. lbs. (60 Nm)
8. Starter mounting fasteners, M12: 48 ft. lbs. (65 Nm)
9. The balance of the installation is in reverse order of removal.

NOTE Be careful not to over tighten the battery cable connection. The metal is soft and the threads will strip easily.

1. Lower the vehicle from the jackstands.
2. Connect the negative battery cable and enter the radio security code.

6. Carefully lower the vehicle, then connect the negative battery cable.

2. Position the starter, then secure using the lower starter bolt. Tighten to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm)
3. If moved, reposition the engine wiring harness.
4. Carefully lower the vehicle.
5. Install the top starter bolt, then tighten to 66 ft. lbs. (90 Nm).
6. Fasten the air inlet duct to the throttle body.
7. Connect the negative battery cable.
