Listen for a loud hissing type noise when the engine is idling. Find the source of the noise. A common problem is a vacuum leak that is caused by the PCV hose rubber fittings collapsing. They look like formed rubber hose connectors similar to the ends of a spark plug wire.

First, go to Autozone or Oreillys for a free scan. Then get a gasket for the airhorn to intake manifold. You need to undo the 8 bolts for the airhorn, remove the base gasket and clean any passages underneath.

When the intake manifold is dirty in that area you will get false EGR flow errors. Once clean it should idle better.

On top on the engine, all the way to the back, and down a little, there some vacuum connection, one has an elbow that always leak's, start engine and feel back there, 9 out of ten time's that's the problem, that will also set an engine light on for lean.

Testimonial: "Thank you so much. That was exactly the problem.. I never would have found it on my own."

Check the fuel pressure at the rail assembly, there should be a min of 40 lbs at the rails. Do you have any loss of power under a load? You may have an issue with your o2 sensor that is causing the ecm to send an improper signal to the engine ign/fuel map.

Inhave a 1999 ford expedition it cranks like a dream but when put in gear it sputters and dies recranks great the sputters and dies in gear

You have a transmission problem. Tcc(torque converter clutch) solenoid stuck. Basically when you put it in drive, it is starting out in overdrive. Causing the engine to die.

This sounds like a bad fuel pump , this is very common. you will need to drop gas tank to install new pump.

My 1999 Ford Expedition stalls at idle when placed into gear

Usually a sign of a dirty throttle body or a faulty idle air control valve.
If it dies like the transmission is engaged, the torque converter could be locked up.

99 expedition running lean and dying when at idle

Sounds like a vacuum leak. Look for obvious vacuum hoses broken, squished or off. Check at egr valve, dpfe sensor & solenoid. These are all common to go bad. If not obvious take carb cleaner with snorkel attached, spray intake manifold & hoses etc. If idle raises while spraying you located vacuum leak. The propelent in the can temporarily seals leak while its being sprayed. Be careful not to spray on wires or anywhere there is a spark.
