I have a 2005 toyota corolla.i started the car one mor ning and smoke started pouring out of the reostat ,and also blew 15 amp dome fuse.I put new reostat and fuse in and imediately it started smoking. checked the cable plugged into the reostat and seems ok. i believe there is short somewhere but the wiring diagrams i have dont show voltages associated with the colored wires.when the fuse blew there was no radio or fans. changing the fuse corrected the radio and fans. The melt down only happens when you turn the ignition on.Has anyone ever had this problem before ? i need help and dont want to pay mega bucks to fix it. Any suggestions
As the voltage from the battery drops, the starter will draw more current, which may have caused the fuse fry - more likely, the connection between the fuse and the socket was worn, causing an arc in the socket, effectively welding the fuse to the socket. You can try using a piece of wire to jump across the two silver tabs on the top of the fuse, and seeing if you can start the car, but eventually, that fuse has to come out.
