My 2006 Nissan Altima started skipping or a slight buck today and has off and off for a few weeks, but today when it did that, the engine light came on. The mechanic checked it and said it was the crank shaft sensor and the speed sensor. We have had no trouble with starting the car and it hasn't just stopped while driving for no reason. He said it might just be a fluke. It has been skipping or slightly bucking though. What could it be?

My 2006 Altima used to be HORRIBLE. The engine would sometimes be hard to start. Bucked like crazy. It would stall randomly if I was stopped or driving slowly (stopping or going for a light, while slowing down during turns). After a couple calls, over a period of months, checking for recalls they finally said there was a recall on the entire engine. Thank goodness my car was still under its 100K miles. Nissan fixed it, as they should. They also claimed the crank sensors needed to be replaced & that my engine mount was cracked. We just paid for all that b/c we were finally glad to have the engine problem resolved free of charge. Loooong story short, have your local dealer check for recalls.

SOURCE: CRANK SHAFT POSITION SENSOR 20002 NISSAN ALTIMA

1st, Nissan had a recall on Crank position sensors for 2002-2006 Altima's. Check with you dealer before you go doing any repairs. You may discover you can get your car repaired at no charge.
NHTSA Campaign ID number :O7V527000
Symptom: Erratic behavior. Stalling and no starts and very difficult to diagnose due to the time frame in which the component actually malfunctions. The warranty should not be limited to the original owner.
I would also need more specifics as to which engine you have so I might assist you in where the location of the sensor is. The Altima had a 4 and a 6 cyl engine offered that year.

HI. I read your problem.
Let me ask you,
The sensor that you are installed are from the dealer or aftermarket?
Because the crank sensor on a 02 to 06. altimas where defectives. or damaged to fast.
Is why NIssan company Made a complety diferent new sensor.
Trying to resolve this problem.
If you haven't get from the dealer, I recomment get one from them. When you see the connector on inverter position don't worry it will fit.
But if you install from the dealer. I recoment check the engine for high vibration.
Check the crankshaft for end play.
And check the wires from the sensor for short, or burned shield.

OK> I hope this work for you..
I have changed few of them..

SOURCE: 2003 Nissan Altima 2.5S, Check Engine Light Problem.

this problem could be caused by the mass air flow censor, i had the same problem with my car. it is really pricey at the dealer so you might want to check elsewhere for this part. I found one at a scrap yard for 85% less that the dealer and i also got life time warranty, the dealer does not offer any warranty on this part.

SOURCE: Crank position sensor for 2003 Nissan Altima

a crank position sensor , sends a signal to pcm about crankshaft position signal, the sensor controls spark timing and firing order. the signal is also used for pcm to detect a missfire!! it also sends this info to ignition module, any mechanic can replace a crankshaft sensor!! call a auto parts store and see if you can get one, the cost should be a lot less.

SOURCE: rough idle, dies when trying to give it gas

it'll either be your ignition system (spark plugs, distributor cap, etc) or more likely your fuel system (most likely your fuel pump or your fuel filter)

Classic engine miss. The cause might be a faulty injector, or more likely an issue with ignition. Start it at night in the dark and look for arcing- that is the area to start. Plug wires and ignition components.

95 altima 2.4L stalling problem

Sounds like it could be a vacuum problem somewhere in the system, which when you reach a certain speed (or any depending on the leak) the computer feeds the engine more or less gasoline, making the engine stall.
There's a few other problems that could be causing this as well. Bad fuel mixture (bad gas), there could be a crack in the fuel line, which is letting in air thus causing the fuel pump to lose its prime.
Do you receive any error codes/any 'check engine' lights?
