The fuel filter is on the passenger side under the door near the front wheel well. It is behind a curved shield and a flat plate covering the fuel filter that is marked "fuel filter replace".
There is an aluminum plate held on with 3 13mm bolts. Remove it. Behind it there is a black plastic shield, held on with 2 10mm nuts. Remove that and you will see the fuel filter, and the bracket that holds it on.

It should be under the car just ahead of the right rear wheel.
Let me know if you found it.

You need the spring lock tool to get them off.

Sometimes you can rent the whole set of different sizes from local auto stores.

SOURCE: Fuel filter

"Under the vehicle drivers side on the frame rail under the driver side door. There is frame right underneath it but you can access it easily. Be sure to release the fuel pressure before changing the filter. The fuel pressure release valve is located in the engine compartment on top of the engine. It is on the left side of the air intake manifold. It is just a small cap over the valve. Be sure not to lose that cap!! When you change the filter, the filter line on each side of the fuel filter has a quick disconnect type fitting inside the line (similar in principle to a quick disconnect on a gas line or air compressor line). To free the filter from the line you must push in (toward the filter) with a simple tool you can purchase at most auto parts stores for just a few dollars.

Additional Information The tool I was able to rent from NAPA. The guys there were very good to me. Look for about 45 min. of time to complete replacement.

While first off your going to need to relieve the pressure in the system, and if you think your going to just pull the fuel pump relay and then run the engine until it stops to relieve pressure it aint gonna work. Get a bleeder gauge. Your also gonna need a quick disconnect tool. Ford models are usually 1/4" 3/8" or 15/16". Put it on the fuel pump right before the "duck bill" then try to push the line foward. If that doesn't work just try to push the tool into the duck bill then try to push the line foward."

Giving the 2002 Ford Explorer gas and it is losing power.

Have you changed the fuel filter? Fuel pump might be going out but would require you to have it tested. Do you have a check engine light on? This is some of the questions I would have in my head. If it's been a while, go ahead and change the fuel filter. If this doesn't help, most auto parts stores have a fuel pump tester for rent. Just make sure to ask them what normal fuel pressure is for your explorer.

most fords have a clip on thr fuel lines that hold the filter on the lines you use a needle nose plyers and remove these and move lines out of the way and then use a 8 mm or a 9/32 socket to remove the braket that holds it in place pull gently and the fuel filter will slide out of the bracket then instilation is reverse of removal

2002 ford explorer

I am guessing here w/o much info, 1 of maybe 4 things, idle speed contoller motor, low fuel pressure, dirty air filter, or lastly, carbon buildup on the throttle body throat. When cold idle the carbon blocks off the little needed air and the engines will run rough or just die.
