1998 Pontiac Grand AM GT motor revs

1998 Pontiac Grand AM GT motor revs inadvertantly / increases speed and will not rev down. Happens in both summer and winter driving conditions. RPMS at 2500-3000 then will quit, and begin running normal. What could this be, a oxygen sensor?

It would not be an O2 sensor, period, they would never cause a high idle, have u had this checked for trouble codes? A sticking idle speed control air bypass can cause this problem as well as a throttle position sensor, but run the codes, Kragen does it for free was well as other parts stores.

Vw golf mark4 over revs

Hello James,

If the engine revs up with no increase in speed, your clutch is slipping. Probably the reason the car was sold!

Why does my pontiac grand am gt 2002 car jump hard when I put it in drive and then it jumps a little going into first gear. I was thinking it was the mtor mount.

Motor & Transaxle Mounts --- may be the issue
If so--- replace them--- all
Put your foot on the brake & put into fwd & rev, while
someone looks under the hood at the motor movement
Have them off to the side & torque the motor some against
the brake
Also check cv axle joints--- once the mounts are taken care of

1998 grand am gt 3.1 litre... When I am driving the RPMs are high (3000) but I have to really push on the gas pedal to get the speed up to 25mph

It's called Bad Transmission, it's slipping...either low on fluid or Burnt, time to replace it or rebuild it

Sometimes when starting the rpm revs up to 2000 and then continues to climb rather than come down. Going along the road it seems to run itself...when I take my foot off the gas it maintains speed for quite...

The throttle body can be sticking. Also you could have a broken throttle position sensor. Vacuum leak, near the rear of the intake can cause increased RPM's. Check around under the hood for loose connections, I always start there.

since it sounds like this happens infrequently, you may want to check for something binding the accelerator pedal. ( wouldn't that be great if its that simple?) one can only hope...

Engine will rev. No drop in speed, no increase in

likely what you are seeing is the first signs of slipping. If permitted to continue, likely it will get worse and you will then lose a bit of speed when it happens. In warmer weather the trans runs a bit hotter and will react to that. If you cannot hear the revs increasing but the tach says they are, it's also possible that for some reason the tach isn't reading correctly. Any good tech should be able to tell the difference. Problem I have is that I'm here and can't drive it to give you a "definite" on either. The only way to verify this yourself would be to attach an external tach to the engine and compare the rpms of the one in your dash to that one.

I have a 1600SX 1998. The idle speed increased to 1800 rpm. I checked for a leak on the vacuum pipes but they are ok. Any ideas please

I think this may be an auto up that is used to increase the revs when the air/con is turned on.It may not be! but it's worth a look. What it does is increase the revs on the motor when the air is switched on, to stop the motor stalling. It works by vacuum and is run by a thing that is about 2 inches across, reasonably flat and has a small hose hooked to it.If the hose is leaking it will increase the revs. This may not be the problem, but start there and I hope you find this helpful.
