W123 1981 E230 MERCEDES TIMING CHAIN COVER REMOVAL

May be its problem with timing chain and it has to be inspected and replaced.Or its possible that timing chain is got misaligned.

remove the front cover of the engine to remove the guide rail .its the only way .

The bulb holders are the smaller,usually white, twist locks directly above the large black headlight cover. It's tucked under the cross bar the bonnet catch bolts to. If there is no bulbs in there you will need the orange coated ones. If none of the indicators work check the fuses and the relay as well. Timing Chain & Gears Removal & Installation To Remove:
NOTE: Keep the cam chain away from magnetic fields.
Crankshaft set at TDC marks

1. Turn the crankshaft pulley so its Top Dead Center (TDC) mark (1) lines up with the pointer (2).
2. Raise and support the vehicle.
3. Remove the front tires/wheels. Front undercar splash shield
   
   
4. Remove the front undercar splash shield.
5. Remove the drive belt.
6. Remove the cylinder head cover (See section on Valve Cover).
7. Remove the crankshaft pulley (See section on Crankshaft Damper). CKP sensor and VTC solenoid electrical connectors
   
   
8. Disconnect the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor connector (1) and Variable Valve Timing Control (VTC) oil control solenoid valve connector (2).
9. Remove the VTC oil control solenoid valve (See section on VTC Solenoid Valve).
10. Support the engine with a jack and wood block under the oil pan. Ground cable and upper bracket removal
    
    
11. Remove the ground cable (1), and remove the upper bracket (2). Side engine mount bracket removal
    
    
12. Remove the side engine mount bracket. Timing chain cover removal
    
    
13. Remove the timing chain cover bolts both from the front to the block and from the bottom to the oil pan.
14. Remove the timing chain cover.
15. Loosely install the crankshaft pulley. Compress the timing chain auto-tensioner
    
    
16. Turn the crankshaft counterclockwise to compress the auto-tensioner. Lock the timing chain auto-tensioner
    
    
17. Align the holes on the lock (1) and the auto tensioner (2), and then insert a 0.06 inch (1.5 mm) diameter pin (3) into the holes.
18. Turn the crankshaft clockwise to secure the pin. Removal of the timing chain auto-tensioner
    
    
19. Remove the auto-tensioner. Removal of the timing chain guide B
    
    
20. Remove the cam chain guide B. Removal of the timing chain guide A
    
    
21. Remove the cam chain guide A (1) and tensioner arm (2).
22. Remove the cam chain.

It's the head cover to be removed not the head.
It is necessary to see the valves in the head to
replace the timing chain.

OIL PUMP
It is necessary to remove the oil pan, oil pickup and chain case cover to service the oil pump rotors. The oil pump pressure relief valve can be serviced by removing the oil pan and oil pickup tube. Refer to Timing Chain Cover Removal and Installation for procedures.

DISASSEMBLY

1. To remove the relief valve, proceed as follows:
2. Drill a 3.175 mm (1/8 inch) hole into the relief valve retainer cap and insert a self-threading sheet metal screw into cap.

1. Clamp screw into a vise and while supporting chain case cover, remove cap by tapping chain case cover using a soft hammer. Discard retainer cap and remove spring and relief valve.
2. Remove oil pump cover screws, and lift off cover.
3. Remove pump rotors.

1. Wash all parts in a suitable solvent and inspect carefully for damage or wear.

Oil Pump Assembly

1. Assemble pump, using new parts as required. Install the inner rotor with chamfer facing the cast iron oil pump cover.
2. Tighten cover screws to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.).
3. Prime oil pump before installation by filling rotor cavity with engine oil.
4. Install chain case cover. Refer to Timing Chain Cover Installation.

REMOVAL of Timing cover
REMOVAL

1. Disconnect negative cable from battery.
2. Remove timing chain cover.

REMOVAL Of Oil Pan to gain Access to OIL PUMP

1. Disconnect negative cable from battery and remove engine oil dipstick.
2. Raise vehicle on hoist and drain engine oil.
3. Remove bending brace to transaxle attaching bolt.
4. Remove bolts attaching dust cover to transaxle housing. Lower dust cover to gain access to oil pan bolts.
5. Remove oil pan screws and remove oil pan.

INSTALLATION

1. Clean surfaces and apply a 1/8 inch bead of Mopar (R) Silicone Rubber Adhesive Sealant or equivalent, at the parting line of the chain case cover and the rear seal retainer.
   1. Use a new pan gasket.
   2. Install pan and tighten screws to 12 Nm (105 inch lbs.).
   3. Install dust shield and bending brace to transaxle housing.
   4. Lower vehicle and install oil dipstick.
   5. Connect negative cable to battery.
   6. Fill crankcase with oil to proper level.

so it takes some Pin pullers, or a litlte bit of messing around witth proper sized (heavy duty) bolt to pull the pins, i cannot seem to find the timing marks on mine once i got it offand want to put back on, i have a chilton and it doesnt help. if you buy the 100 -200 dolar shop manual from bentley it would probably be quite simple :)

pull, pins, timing cover, water pump, solenoid, etc. to get to timing cover, uppe and lower,pull valve cover, and loosen cam (exhaust side) to get chain off. :)

If it has not broken or jumped timing you simply remove the valve cover and timing chain tennsioner. Then cut a link out of the old chain on top of the cam gear, then you attach the new chain with the supplied master link and slowly rotate the engine until the old chain has run out and the new chain is in it's place. It's best to have a helper to rotate so you can hold the chain against the cam gear. Once this is done recheck the can timing and do not let the chain slip or you will have to pull the injection pump and retime it. Even if you do it's easier than removing the front cover! Good luck!
