I have a 2005 Malibu with a factory car starter. I have two key fobs. One has never worked and the other works when it feels like it. It will always unlock/lock the door or open the trunk but it won't always remotely start the car, even from short distances. I bought the car used and when I asked the dealer he said basically the factory key fobs are garbage. Any solutions? Can I replace the key fob with another one?
I had a problem where some buttons on the key fob quit working. I went to www.keylessfix.com and fixed it for under $10.
You need to get one that works on the same wide range frequency as the reciever in the car, and then it's a simple matter of opening both the new and old fobs, and matching the fine frequency settings by putting the little switches inside where they should be according to the old fob's switches. If there are no switches in the old fob, it's preset and there's not much you can do about it.
If
the remote s faulty then key fob will not get programmed.
Insert
the key in ignition. Turn the key to on position, and cycle the key three times
off-on-off-on-off-on. Then with the key fob remote select your remote and then
try to operate the vehicle with remote.
These
are just the basic procedure, but sometimes it will not help.
On
that case dealer is the only option.

I bought the vehicle from a used car dealer, not a Chevy dealer.
Thanks for the suggestion I'll let you know how I make out.
Another thing I've noticed with the remote start is it will flash that it's starting but the engine doesn't start. Then when I get to the car the fan is blowing but the engine is not running. Any ideas or suggestions why this would be happening? It's almost as if the remote isn't strong enough to get the engine going. This is an on again/off again problem. Some days it works just fine and other days the remote won't even open the locks. Can you just replace the key fobs or do you have to replace the whole system? Any ideas or suggestions are welcome, thanks.
Chevy dealer?
Car has been sitting for over 1 year with no battery connected. Put a new battery in, lights come on, doors open, etc, but panel says no fob detected! And it will not start! What could be the problem? Thanks.
Do they have a battery that can be changed or what?
We just purchased this car. It has an aftermarket key and a FORD keyfob. We must have used the keyfob the first few times and it started fine. Then used the key to unlock door and now the thing won't start -- sure likes to honk at me though. Any ideas? I already had it to the dealer. They reset it but neglected to tell me that I should get a factory key. Another tow may take care of it but also will cost more bucks. Thanks!
And when they are opened manually they won't lock. Also the car won't start from the outside when asked by key fob. Are they related? The door locks are really annoying. You can't reach the back lock so we have to roll down the electric window to unlock the door manually. That door will remain unlock until closed manually.
The key fob for my 2005 Chevy Equinox will only lock my vehicle, it won't unlock it. When I first got it (used 85,000 mi) it worked to both lock and unlock but now it only allows me to lock. Can only unlock vehicle with actual key and they have to immediately start the vehicle so the alarm won't go off.
