Ignition and Transmisssion Locked on 2000 Chevy Malibu

I cannot start my 2000 Chevy Malibu b/c the ignition will not turn at all. I tried jiggling the shifter (also locked up), wrenching the wheel, jiggling the key, trying both sides of the key, trying the other set of keys, had other people try as well........and cannot get the thing to turn at all.

Is this a security system gone bad?
Do I need a locksmith? -- or will a mechanic be cheaper?
Is this a replace the ignition job? or........?

Does this car have a brake interlock system? If so, have you tried depressing tehbrake pedal while attempting to start?

I had a similar problem on a 2001 GM product. The problems all stemmed from a worn out key. Keys are made from softer metals so that they wear out before the expensive cylinder does. Debris had collected in the cylinder preventing ANY key from turning it - corrected that with compressed air. Replaced the key at the dealer by providing the VIN and my ID w/registration - $10.00. Kept the old keys because they still worked for opening the trunk. Try it, I bet your symptoms and fix actions are very similar, at least, I hope so. Regards.

My ignition switch is locked up on my 2000 malibu and will not turn a bit, How do I get it to turn over to the run position? Needing to change it out with a new one.

Best you can do is... try another matching key or jiggle the key until it turns. Be sure that the steering wheel isn't jammed against the steering wheel lock - if it is, it'll make the key hard to turn & it'll be tough to tell that it CAN be turned. If necessary, jack up the front of the car for a moment, just to release side stress on the tires.

Ignition locked

The ignition lock cylinder tumblers get in a bind all the time on GM vehicles. It probably has little to do with inseting the wrong key. Try inserting the correct key and "jiggle" the key in the lock. You may have to jiggle it up and down and rotate (or try to rotate) the lock cylinder forward and backward. It will probably work just fine if you can wiggle it with just the right combination. If not, you may have a damaged lock cylinder and you will have to replace it. - most likely nothing you did....I change at least two or three of these things every week...VERY COMMON.

IF THE ANTI THEFT LIGHT IS FLASHING WHEN U TRY TO START IT, TRY TURNING THE KEY TO THE ON POSITION FOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES OR UNTIL THE LIGHT STOPS FLASHING. THEN TURN IT BACK FOR 5 SECS AND TRY TO START AGAIN. ALSO CHECK THE STARTER, IGNITION, AND FUEL PUMP.

It should take about 8minutes to reset the ignition system but if it is doing it all the time ,the pass lock in the ignition switch is toast! You have no choice but to replace the ignitin switch!

Ignition and Transmisssion Locked on 2000 Chevy Malibu

On this car there is a cable that is tied into the shifter, so you have to turn the keep to be able to take it out of gear. Its all in 1 big housing. Usually to remove the ignition cylinder it has to be in the run position and you push a little key down to remove it. Since your key won't turn you have to figure out a way to do it.However once you replace the ignition cylinder your shifter will move and you will be able to start the car. To get to the ignition switch/cylinder you have to remove the molding around the instrument panel and then the instrument cluster. Then you can unbolt the assembly in the front with a 10mm socket. lift the assembly up and now you have access to change it out. Hope this helps.
