How often to replace cv boots/cv joints/axle?

There is only one way to change a c/v joint, no such thing asan easy way to do a job cprrectly

A most likely suspect would be your CV joint on your front axle. It usually makes a clicking noise while turning sharply, when they first start to fail. Often you can visually inspect them, and see a torn boot , or leaking grease, but you are most likely in need of a rebuilt axle installed. When I change them, I usually just replace both axles, and wheel bearings at the same time, since the car is apart.

One would have to remove the half shaft to service the cv joint properly.

It's easier to replace the whole axle , they are cheap in our days.

Usually once the boot is torn, dirt goes in, and all of the lubricant goes out. If you have been driving it this way, it will damage things faster. Normally you hear a "click" when turning out of a bad cv joint.It is a safer solution to just replace both, but of coarse, not cheaper.

I would not let them go for to long, it will only cost you more money in the long run. I have had several front wheel drive cars, one being a honda. I let them go for a few months when I new they needed replacing. All the dust and little rocks and debris got in there. I ended up having to replace both drive axels and also replacing the boots. So I would get this fixed as soon as possible.

Maybe a CV shaft, look for torn boots on the outer joints. The one with the torn boots is more likely the bad joint.

If a boot is torn or missing, it is possible to save the joint if caught early enough, but usually the damage has already been done. Replacing or servicing the entire CV joint axle assembly may be the smarter move since replacing a boot may involve removing an axle, which may also involve removing half or all of the vehicle's brakes and suspension.

no you cant grease a cv joint, it is a sealed unit and comes pre greased! when you turn sharp at slow speeds does it sound like rocks rolling around in a coffee ca? then its a cv axle! also check large boots at both end of each axle. if the boot is torn the cv axle is either bad or will need replaced very soon! yes a back yard mech can replace easily but you will need a front end alignment when you are done! hints for replaceing! pop axle out with a pry bar at trasmission., to put back it use old end nut only 1/4 of the way on and hit with a hammer to seat lock ring then check at tranny to make sure it is seate! hope this helps

on this type of vehichle, you have two axles in the front; one going to each side. Chances are that the boot at the axle joint was torn and that is why you are having problem. In teh past people used to replace the boot, this day and age its actually cheaper to replace the axle. So you would need to replace that side of the axle (the half shaft).
