The outer door handle was recently taken off to get a new key cut from the barrel. It was re-attached exactly as it was taken off, the two metal rods were re-attached and the clips holding them in place. The lock works fine and the inner door handle opens the door just fine. But I cant tell if the rod for the outer door handle has come loose at the bottom because it is obscured by a plastic sheath and the bottom of the rod for the lock mechanism
Just cut a square hole in said plastic sheet and look to see what you want to see. Then just tale the plastic sheet back up when your done.

You can get inside door handle either new or used from sellers on ebay. It should be just a few dollars plus shipping. Just search ebay for "Inside door handle 1991 Toyota Corolla."

The horizontal rod doesn't actually connect to the vertical rod. The horizontal rod connects to the door latch mechanism. The vertical rod also connects to the door latch, but at a different location. If as I'm guessing the horizontal rod has become dis-connected, it's probably because either the connector broke or fell off.
