Working on 2000 dodge stratus replaced timing timing belt removed cyl head sent to mechine shop got it back putevery thing back together fired up second try i felt like valve cover was getting hotter ...

just a thing to check. make sure your oil pump is in synch with your engine timing. sometimes the oil pump cycles 2 or even 3 times for each cam rotation. other vehicles it cycles 1 time for every 3 cam rotations. depends on your vehicle. otherwise, i'd say you have a valve guide seal in need of replacement due to oil slippling past it. rings are the worst case scenario since you removed the cylinder head did you prime it before you started it with an oil film? there are a lot of things it could be but i'd check these first.

Temp gauge only goes to a 1/4 of the way up. does not heat up

Because its real hard to gert to. Most likely the throttle body needs to be removed and maybe part of the exh crossover. Check if the INTAKE MANIFOLD GASKETS are leaking. If they are have them replaced and the thermostat at the same time. Intake gaskets are REAL COMMON. Once the intake is off, its a 5 minute job.

Which head goes on which side of a gm 5.7

There are usually bolt holes on one or both of the heads at the front of the head this will indicate that that end will face the front of the vehicle and then the heads can only go on one way.
