I opened my 2004 Chevy Tahoe Sunroof, is stuck open moves slightly forward and back when the button is pressed but will not close.
It sounds like it just needs to be reinitialized. Turn your key to the on position with motor off and hold the up/full vent button down for at least 30 seconds or until your sunroof either clicks or goes to the full vent position. That should fix your problem.
Thank you I just saw ur post and it did work I was gonna take it to an electric shop tomorrow but not anymore thanks you fixed the problem
I have same problem with my 2005 GMC Yukon XL Denali, and I had tried this a few times with no success. I looks to me like the "shade" portion is further back than the "glass" portion of the sunroof. As I recall, it's supposed to be the other way around, right?
Do you think this might be my problem, cockusrockus?
Mine did the same thing. I was able to get it out but no luck getting the sunroof closed. I'm going to try the tips above.
Thanks. This reset worked exactly for my 2016 Tahoe. Part# 84119757 (Side Cover) rubber piece on the
driver side came off and caused this issue. I will have to order a new one. Approx $33.

To check the condition of your original sunroof guides:
- Gl*** in closed position.
- Locate & remove 3 torx bolts on each side of sunroof glass. Lift glass out of sunroof opening & set aside in a safe place.
- Locate "J" shaped cover plate at front of sunroof track assembly. Remove 2 torx bolts from each cover plate.
- Lift up bracket to remove.
- Inspect the plastic guides on each side. The sunroof cables attach to guides on front outer corner. Inspect this area closely for damage.
- Do not operate the sunroof with the J plates removed.
Troubleshooting:If the sunroof guides are not broken & the glass is a uniform height along the rear edge your problem may be a stripped gear inside the motor. The motor has a manual override:
- Get access to the motor by removing the map light/switch console or lowering the front of the headliner.
- Insert a large standard screwdriver into the nylon bushing at the center of the motor hub. Push up & turn the screwdriver to manually move the sunroof glass. If the unit will fully open & close manually, you most likely only need a replacement motor.
If your sunroof is stuck in the open position follow these steps to get it closed:
- Remove the glass.
- Try to close the unit without the glass. Many times one side will still be operational and close correctly.
- Try to slide the inoperable lift arm forward. If it moves, slide it forward until it stops.
- You now need to slide the original plastic guide forward to lower the arm to the closed position. Using a standard screwdriver, push it forward. The lift arm should begin to lower.
- If the lift arm will still not fully lower, remove the J plate as explained above, sometimes the sunroof cable will need to be lifted up to allow the guide to fully slide forward.
- Reinstall glass.

same
thats the same thing my sun roof does.it powered open but it was a slow pulsating opening.then when it open it would not close! AFTER IT SIT A WHILE IT TRID TO CLOSE just a little then stop
mine will not close all the way, I have about a 10 inch gap and when it rains the liner gets wet if I don't keep it covered. I think it's off track, need help getting it back on track
the sunroof is stuck open will not go down all the way
wont go forward
I had the exact same issue with my 2002 Tahoe, acted like it was sticking on something when you tried to move the glass forward, After taking the assembly out of the truck I found that the drip tray that is mounted at the rear of the glass was jammed against the end of the track , this tray moves with the window ,it has guides that move in the tracks with the glass. If the window is moved back slightly to far (which they all do with usage over time)the guides length is such that it moves passed the end of the track and when you go to move the window forward the guide jams against the end of the track thus no forward movement more than a 1/4 inch or less. I pushed the pan down so the guide would line up with the track and it closed as normal. If you pull the headliner down you can reach the 2 corners of the drip tray pull down on the corners while someone else operates the forward switch the guide should go back into the track. if you don't bend the stop tabs forward ,the next time you open the sunroof all the way, the guide will come out of the end of the track and bind up when you try to close it
