Dome Light in Saturn SL/1 Not Working

The dome light in my Saturn SL/1 has a three position switch, on, off and door. When the switch is in Door position, the dome light should come on and off with the door opening and closing. When I put the switch to the door position, the light comes on and stays on regardless of whether or not the door is opened.

I see that there is a plunger mechanism on each side of the dash board. I'm assuming that this plunger mechanism controls that light. When I manually push the plunger in, the light still does not go off. I put some WD/40 on the plunger, but still no effect on the light. Neither the driver side or the passenger side plunger seem to work.

Is there something I can do to fix this problem or do I have to take the car into a dealer? Thanks for your help.

I have the same problem with a '99 SL2. Switches are low on the post, but same issue.

I have the same problem. The pin on the driver side door frame is broken off. It's located in a bad spot along the bottom fram rail and I assume someone stepped on it or kicked in when getting in or out of the car. Does anyone know how to replace the pin or where to get the part?

After getting my 2008 saturn vue, i noted that the passenger sun visor was a bit droopy so i asked the dealer to order a new one. After the dealership installed the new visor i noticed that the light would not go off in the inside of the sun visor, so i took the car back and asked them to fix the problem. My guess is that they let the car sit there all night and early into the morning with the sun visor light still on because when i got the car back for them the part of the sun visor were the light is was melted and not only did they no replace the visor but now my interior lights will only come on if the doors are open. I checked all the fuses there do not seem to be any blown, but the lights still will not work this includes the above head lights, the reading lights, glovebox light, and the driver side sun visor light "because there is not a sun visor in the passenger side anyone". I can't figure out the problem, how do the lights work when the doors open and close, but if i push the button for the light to come on with the doors closed nothing happens?? I need help this has been going on for over a year and no dealers can figure out the problem. I just want my lights to come on when i push the button

Turn the key on then push in on the plungers, also twist and turn them. with the key off the light is on a timer and will not go off right away. if the key is on the light should go on and off with plunger movment.

Dome light won't cut off after door is shut

Adjust the dome light switch by moving the switch lever to a different position. If this does not work, either the dome light switch is defective or wires inside the dome light came loose and caused a short across the switch itself.

Dome light won't come on when door is opened (switch in center or 2 position). Dome light does work when switch pushed to position 1.

Center is the off position. Position 2 is "on when doors are open", Position 1 is "on all the time". The switch (relay) that turns it on when the door opens is likely bad. Play with the button ont he door frame to see if this problem is there.
Also, check if the light comes on when you unlock the car when the swich is in position 1. If light does come on when unlocking, you have a bad switch on the door frame (turns light on when you open the door when the doors were already unlocked). If you don't get light, the switch by the dome light might be bad.

Good luck.

Kelli says to move switch for dome light to dome for door activation on '08 Sonata, but I see no such switch. Where is it?

That particular switch is on the dome light itself. It'll have three settings, Off, On, and Dome. Just like it says, the Off position makes sure the dome light never comes on, the On position makes sure the dome light is always on and the Dome position makes sure the dome light comes on when you open the door.

Dome Light (switched circuit now working) Shorted it out

Why didn't you hook into the entertainment system (radio ) ?
The one that turns on when the door opens is controlled by the BCM -body control module .You probably shorted out the transistor in side the BCM .
These lamps may be manually turned on by placing the interior lamp switch in the ON position, or by opening a door.
ā€¢ The Dome Lamp
ā€¢ The Rear Compartment Courtesy Lamp
ā€¢ The Rear View Mirror Map Lights
The inadvertent power control circuit of the BCM supplies battery positive voltage to the dome lamp and the map lamps. When any door is opened, the door jamb switch contacts close providing a door open input to the BCM. The BCM then provides a ground to the interior lamps. The interior lamps receive a ground at G401 or G403.
If the driver inadvertently leaves any interior lamp on the BCM will turn it off after a 20 minute time-out.
The courtesy lamps will normally turn off using the theater dimming feature. The BCM provides a pulse width modulated ground to the interior lamps for the theater dimming feature. The courtesy lamps will also turn off immediately if a door lock command is received with all the doors closed, or if the ignition switch is turned to the ON position.

Changing the dome light switch

no. The door switch is in the side of the dashboard. the sides have 7mm screws that need to be removed and then the panels pry off. the switch has four little tabs that fold in and the switch slides out of the panel.

Saturn Turn Signal / Dome Light Issues

The interior lamps system consists of 2 main features. Illuminated entry and a battery saver feature that will turn the interior lights off after 20 minutes if they are left On with all doors closed and the ignition Off. The body control module (BCM) controls both of these functions. Battery power is supplied by the BCM through CKT 1732 to the following lamps:
ā€¢ The dome lamp
ā€¢ The map lamps
ā€¢ The rear reading lamps
ā€¢ The rear dome lamp
ā€¢ The cargo lamp
ā€¢ The glove compartment lamp
ā€¢ The courtesy lamps
ā€¢ The sunshade lamps
The BCM also controls the ground circuit side of the dome lamp and reading lamps for illuminated entry. The dome lamp and reading lamp will remain on for 20 seconds after the ignition key is removed and the last door is closed. In addition, if the vehicle is equipped with remote keyless entry (RKE), the dome and reading lamps will turn On and stay on for 20 seconds after an UNLOCK signal is received from the keyless entry transmitter.
The reading lamps, dome lamp and map lamps can be turned On at any time by moving the appropriate switch to the On position.
The rear dome lamp is fed battery voltage through CKT 1732 from the BCM, through the liftgate ajar switch, and is grounded through CKT 650 to the rear ground splice pack. The rear dome lamp will turn on when the liftgate is opened. The cargo lamp is fed battery voltage through CKT 1732 from the BCM, through CKT 744 and grounded through the decklid ajar switch.
The courtesy lamps are fed battery power through CKT 1732 and are grounded through CKT 745-- left front, CKT 747--left rear, CKT 748--right rear, CKT 746--right front. These circuits will ground through the door jamb switches. The courtesy lamp will be illuminated when the affected door is opened. For example, when the right rear door is opened, the right rear door courtesy lamp will turn on.

Not a fuse problem , if the BCM had blown fuse other thing's wouldn't be working as well . . Probably wiring or BCM . Using factory diagnostic,s instead of guessing as to what the problem is , is the proper way .

Interior Lamps Diagnosis
Symptom
Procedure
Important: Before proceeding with these diagnostics, check for DTCs. If DTCs are present, complete the associated diagnostics. If the condition still exists, return to this chart.
All of the interior lamps are inoperative when any door is opened.
Chart 1
The dome lamp is inoperative in the ON position, but OK in the door position. The map lamps operate normally.
The dome lamp switch is faulty. Replace the dome lamp switch.
The dome lamp is inoperative in the DOOR position, but is OK in the ON position.
Chart 2
The dome lamp is inoperative in any position and both reading lamps are inoperative.
Disconnect the dome lamp connector (BLK 3-way).
Check for voltage at terminal "C" CKT 1732 ORN wire.
If OK, the dome/map lamp is faulty. If no voltage is present, there is an OPEN in CKT 1732.
Either the right or the left sunshade mirror lamp is inoperative.
Chart 3
Either the right or the left rear reading lamp is inoperative in the ON or the DOOR position.
Chart 4
The rear reading lamp is inoperative in the ON or the DOOR position.
Chart 5
Battery rundown protection is shorted to ground - B1482.
B1482
The left rear reading lamp is inoperative in the ON or the DOOR position.
