No accelration on the highway

I had my Volvo at the mechanic recently and he mentioned that the connection to the turbo had fallen off. He said it was quite common, there is a small pin that holds the connection in place and the pin gets rusty and breaks. He didn't even charge for it, said the fix only took a few minutes. Several suggestions, some cheap, others not. The overdrive relay is the first suspect. It's located on the relay rack behind the fuse panel (usually). Cheap fix. About $10 on Ebay. Just be sure the part numbers match. I always carry a spare. The speed sensor might be another source of problems. It measures RPMs and feeds the info to the computer. Not an easy do-it-yourself fix. Also, the transmission control module. An easy swap with a spare from Ebay. It hides under the dashboard, passenger side. A solenoid on the transmission locks the OD in and out. Not an easy do-it-yourself fix. Volvos are notorious for flaky issues like this, so I would try all the simple fixes before bringing it to your mechanic.

Water in combustion chamber makes white smoke--suspect that the head gasket is leaking water into the chamber. If oil leaking around turbo, it may have a bad bearing and bad oil seal. Check waste gate valve and control.

Are you consider yourself a handy person?

Swap the coil and see is the misfire going to follow to another bank of cylinder.

You has total of 3 coil in your engine.

Do a detail record map and switch the two coils.

A replacement aftermarket coil is oil $46 w/one year warranty and $55 will get you a life time warrent coil.

Do the swap and see what happen.

A leaky/failing injector can also cause the same problem.


Do a Chevron Techron fuel injector clean ran and highway ran.

check to make sure the turbo oil return pipe is not clogged. if it is pressure will build up causing oil leak through seal causing it to smoke.

is it tubro as these have a common problem with oil leaking out the turbo ..... possible turbo fault can you send me more info

I would have the throttle plate cleaned because when they get dirty they have the symptoms that you are describing
