Why is it that over revving results in more black smokes? Is it a good standard for smoke test to over rev? I own a 1 year and 5 months Mitsubishi Montero Sport with 13,000 kilometer mileage. Also, a Mazda BT-50 6 months old with 5,000 km mileage. Both failed the smoke emission tests! At normal revs of around 1000-2500, very minimal smoke comes out. We even barely use 2500+ RPM when traveling long distances including uphill climbs and minimal smokes comes out. Now, when we volunteered for smoke tests, they told us that it has to be revved at 4000! Since the equivalent displacement for smoke tests says so. Surely as it is, black smokes instantaneously came out. At 8 attempts, the smoke became less but minimal difference. We complained because our cars are barely new, with minimal mileage. We had regular oil change at 5K intervals from the car manufacturer itself. But why is it still that we failed? Is it relational to the over revving done? What are the effects of over revving? Thank you.

The Effects of Over Revving a motor can be Catastrophic. I do not understand why the government would require someone to do such a test. Normal Emissions Testing is done at High (2100 - 2500) and the Idle (500-900).

Reason for Increased Smoke.... As you increase the internal pressure of the vehicle, you are creating a VACUUM and this is suckking the Oil past the rings, and anywhere else that it is causing the Vacuum.

Efffects of Over Revving van be Premature Failure of the engine (Could cost you $5-$8,000 to replace)... I would ask WHY so high... A Diesel would MAX OUT their RPM @ 4,000.

These people who are doing the test, ask them to show you where it says in WRITING 4,000... That is much higher than in the 4 states I have been certified to be an I/M Inspector

I did asked them why use so high RPM if under normal or even loaded driving, we barely use 2500+. They said that it is based on the model and displacement. They showed me a graph of what revolution must be used on different displacements. Also, it is ironic that they use a higher standard for new cars. In old cars, 3.5 is passing but on new cars it has to be 2. So even if the new car emits much lower smoke, it fails. How ironic. My additional question is, does fuel quality or octane level affects smoke emission? Higher Octane for higher compression only? Thank you.

Your Car smoking can be caused by a few things.. If you want to get it to stop smoking, there are Additives that you can put into your OIL to stop it from smoking. RESTORE 8 CYLINDER has worked well before for a few of my customers (even if it is a 4 Cylinder, use the 8 Cylinder). If you want to CLEAN your Engine, then Adding SEA FOAM to your Fuel, will celan everything... Will Octane Improve Performance? Yes, but many think it is not worth the Expense... If you are trying to get it to Pass, then try anything you can

White smoke is antifreeze leak into cylinder.
Blue smoke is oil passing by rings or valve stems.
Black smoke could be gasoline problem or tune up problem.

Wish you luck on this repair.

Bank 1 is the converter on the side that engine cylinder one is on. Yes that is true about the converter, the computer is programmed for a certain value, an aftermarket cat will not meet that value and the check engine lite will be triggered.

SOURCE: vehicle smoking

If your car has blue smoke, then that is oil that is burning. You might have a worn out engine or bad valves. To check the condition on your engine, you should get a engine compression check. Was your engine oil level checked for proper oil levels?

Bent pushrods on 95 dodge magnum 360

Light blue or blue/grey smoke is burnt engine oil and it is worth carrying out an accurate oil consumption test in order to decide whether it is excessive (better than 750 miles per litre is considered economically acceptable).

Bent pushrods are usually the result of over-revving the engine to the point of valve bounce. At high mileage the valve springs weaken and valve bounce occurs at progressively lower revs. Exceeding safe revs will often throw out a pushrod if the engine design allows enough room and it used to be a common problem - being called out to a truck with a misfire somewhere near the bottom of a steep hill, only to discover it was nothing more than a thrown pushrod; the driver had clearly engaged a lower gear at too high a road speed.
If the pushrod has nowhere to go, it often results in a bend and sometimes a breakage or with some engines a displaced rocker post...

Hi should my 2014 450 sxf blow a black ish kind of smoke when revved an on down rev a bluey black smoke think its called blow by? And what should I do to fix it? Could it just be a spark plug? Thanks

is yours the 2 stroke model or 4 stroke model ? 2 stroke model they do burn oil so it would be blue/black smoke, 4 stroke should be gray/blue color, if 4 stroke model it could be the timing is out a bit or the spark plug is not set right. or weak dispak. it can also be the fuel to air mix is out of alignment.

My '95 mighty max with 110,000 miles just had new cap and rotor, spark plugs and wires, and PCV valve. New battery timing belt "A" and "B". Timed to 7.5 deg with the timing...

If it is doing this only when you rev the engine after it has been idling a while, it is probably smoke from burning oil. A new set of valve stem seals will probably work wonders in reducing the smoke. Stopping the oil consumption will not only help it to pass a smog test but will also help to keep from damaging your engine and your catalytic converters. 110,000 miles is just barely broke-in for a Mitsubishi engine. However, the seals are probably cracked and broken due to the AGE of the vehicle.

2003 tdi automatic, smokes black on every start

Unless you want to scorch the nozzles and risk burning a hole in a piston, do NOT use John Deere conditioner in a TDI. The injection pressures/nozzles are not tolerant of John Deere conditioner. smoke = bad.....high egts....and high egts = melting valves.  Smoke means soot, soot clogs the intake manifold and the vanes in the VNT, And soot from the EGR system. And once that soot is in there, it can harden to what you swear is something melded with your intake manifold's metal. Black smoke on a diesel is power you can see but not use, and the amount of over fueling required to produce it can have disastrous effects on the life expectancy of your engine. Melted or holed pistons, coked up injector tips, coked up rings, stuck vanes in the VNT turbo, all problems that can arise from a TDI that's constantly and consistently over fueled past the smoke limit. Leaving it in 2nd gear will have the turbo revving at a high rate and waring it out prematurely and can cause damage to the Vanes in the VNT for constant over boosting due to high revs. Good luck and i'ld look for a different mechanic who under stands Modern Diesel Racine Design Engines.
