SOURCE: Continuous "whine" @ 1500 RPM only; and jerks/2001 Lincoln LS

Run the car from the top of a hill and let it coast at your whining speed. Put it in Neutral, does the whine disappear?
If not its in the drivetrain (wheels, driveshafts, tranny)
Very unlikely to be the timing belt. If it appears at a fixed speed then its drivetrain, if it whines at fixed revs its the engine.
Most likey the transmission I fear....Tires will also make loud whining noise too though...

My 2004 Lincoln LS rattles each morning when I start it. It usually does not rattle during the day, but it does every once in awhile. Is this a timing chain or tensioner problem? If so, is this...

The V8 LS does have a history of timing chain tensioners bleeding down and causing a rattle as you describe. Make sure the oil filter you are using has a anti drain back valve. New tensioners are very labor intensive to install. Lincoln has no recalls for this problem hopefully you have some extended warranty to help with the cost of this repair.

Other than the chain breaking? I would recommend replacing all the chains while it is apart. Also all timing chain tensioners, tension arms & guides.

Timing CHAIN tensioner you mean? Better have that noise checked ASAP. It may be a problem with the timing chain.

Engine rattling

Hello if your sport trac has a 4.0 v6 it has two timing chains. One on front drivers side head and one rear passenger side. The timing chain on the rear is costly to repair, which is usually the one to go out.
