The firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.
The distributor rotates in a clockwise direction. The engine must be on the compression stroke on the #1 cylinder. Line up the timing marks. Remove the cap and the rotor should be pointing to approximately the 5 o'clock position.

Good Luck

I tried to do this firing order with the rotor at 5 o'clock it didnt work it wouldnt start and just blew like air through my throttle body on my 1990 chevy with 5.7 350

  • Anonymous Feb 26, 2013

hey bud....I'm a licenced auto tech, pull your number 1 spark plug out, get a 5/8th socket, on a ratchet with an extension. Have someone plug the spark plug hole with their finger. Turn the engine over with the socket onto the front crankshaft pulley bolt, it's inside the lower crank pulley. turn the engine over clockwise, this way it won't loosen your crank bolt keep turning till your partner feels compressed air starting to push against their finger, as you feel the compression pushing on your finger, watch the timing mark, and when it reaches 0 degrees stop. Now you're on top dead center, firing on number one cylinder. Place your distributor back in, you'll have to move the shaft a bit to get the cam gear to engage. It may take a try or two to get it at approx the 5 o clock position. Once you have it down and in and your rotor is facing the 5 0 clock position, set your cap on and scratch on the cap where your rotor is pointing. The tang inside the cap facing the tip of the rotor is now your number 1 firing. when you've done this, then just run your wires to your plugs. firing order is 18436572, so after number 1 is on, going in the direction of rotor rotation , next place #8 wire on, then #4 etc. You'll have to fine tune the distributor for exact timing after you have it running.

I have a 1985 Chevy 350 with an ac delco hei distributor and i have the plug wires crossed up somewhere. I need a diagram to show the correct plug wire placement please. Thanks

This should do it.
You can also do an internet search for a standard 350 Chevy engine.
The firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2
The order is the same for engines from the mid 1990s back to the late 1970s.

Just wondering if you have a breakdown diagram for a 1992 dodge colt 1.5l distributer

I do not have a breakdown diagram for a distributor, but just the firing orders and description of ignition system for the Dodge Colt and related models (based on Chilton manuals) if that's what you're looking for: FIRING ORDERS Fig. 1: 1990 1.8L SOHC Engines Firing order: 1-3-4-2 Rotation: clockwise 84182009.gif

Fig. 2: 1.6L DOHC Engine Firing order: 1-3-4-2 Distributorless Ignition 84182010.gif

Fig. 3: 2.0L Engine Firing order: 1-3-4-2 Rotation: clockwise 84182011.gif

Fig. 4: 1.5L Engine Firing order: 1-3-4-2 Rotation: counterclockwise 84182012.gif

Fig. 5: 1993 1.8L Engine Firing order: 1-3-4-2 Rotation: counterclockwise 84182013.gif

Fig. 6: 2.4L Engine Firing order: 1-3-4-2 Rotation: clockwise 84182014.gif

To avoid confusion, replace spark plug wires one at a time. --- Distributor REMOVAL & INSTALLATION Although the distributor can be removed from the engine no matter which cylinder is about to fire, it is a good idea to have number one cylinder at TDC before distributor removal. 1.5L, 1.8L, 2.4L SOHC Engines
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Disconnect and tag the spark plug wires from the distributor cap.
  3. Disconnect the distributor harness connector.

Fig. 4: Ignition system for the 2.4L engine 84183004.gif

  4. Loosen the distributor retaining bolt and remove the distributor from the engine. To install:
  5. Rotate the engine until No. 1 cylinder is at TDC on its compression stroke. NOTE: Be careful not to turn it to the No. 4 cylinder TDC on its compression stroke by mistake.
  6. Align the distributor housing and gear mating marks.

Fig. 7: Distributor installation for the 1992-93 1.8L engine 84183007.gif

  7. Install the distributor into the engine, while aligning the fine cut (groove or projection) on the distributor flange with the center of the distributor mounting stud.
  8. Install and tighten the distributor retaining bolt.
  9. Reconnect the distributor harness connector.

Firing diagram for 1990 caddy sedan deville front wheel 4.5?

To avoid confusion, remove and tag the spark plug wires one at a time, for replacement.
If a distributor is not keyed for installation with only one orientation, it could have been removed previously and rewired. The resultant wiring would hold the correct firing order, but could change the relative placement of the plug towers in relation to the engine. For this reason it is imperative that you label all wires before disconnecting any of them. Also, before removal, compare the current wiring with the accompanying illustrations. If the current wiring does not match, make notes in your book to reflect how your engine is wired.

Change plugs and wire and engine will not acclerate. This is a built 350 short block chevy with pro charger.

350 Chevy engine in what? 1990 Corvette? Who built it, did you?

Sounds as though you have plug wires wrong.
Firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

Distributor Ignition System:
Distributor rotates Clockwise. (Rotor)
Find Number 1 tower on distributor cap, go Clockwise with Firing Order.

Distributorless Ignition System:
VIEWING the engine from the Front of the car.

Spark plug wire connections along the back, starting from Left side going to Right side;
2-3-7-4

Spark plug wire connection towards the Front of the engine;
6-1-5-8

(To guess I would say you have 5 and 7 wires switched)

Left side cylinder order is 1-3-5-7, going from front to back.
Drivers side is Left side.
Right side cylinder order is 2-4-6-8, going from front to back.
