Here it says hand tight and a bit more, another says hand tight and a quarter turn. Replace the compression washer on the plug and you could use Loctite Thread locker as well. It is also possible that the threads are worn on the plug or in the sump. They are susceptible to being over-tightened.
Install the oil pan drain plug with a new O-ring and torque the plug: a. On a plastic oil pan, torque plug to 45 N·m +/- 7 N·m (33 lb·ft +/- 5 lb·ft). b. On an aluminum oil pan torque plug to 60 N·m +/- 9 N·m (44 lb·ft +/- 6 lb·ft).

jack it up, drain oil from drain plug on oil pan when drained remove and replace oil filter also. remove the pan bolts pull off pan and gasket.put new oil pan gasket on if needed.when oil pan bolts are back in, screw them in hand tight, then torque them down to specs and alter nate the tightening so it wont damage pan seal. any auto parts store can tell you the torque on the bolts for your car. good day!
I'm sure that there are torque specs. for this. I just did both pans on my 1999 Mercury Sable with a 3.0 Duratec V6 DOHC with the AX4N transmission and both pans on that are tightened to 7-9 ft.-lbs. I don't know if this would be the same unless it has an AX4N transmission. I hope this helps. Good Luck!!!
easy job. Just loosen pan bolts enough to let the fluid start draining from one end. As more drains, keep loosening the pan bolts till you can remove pan and finish draining what's left in the pan. At this time, most people would also change the transmission filter body: it's right on bottom of trans. when the pan is removed, easily accesible. Parts stores sell a kit with new filter and pan gasket included. Anyway, now you are ready to install new pan gasket. Clean gasket mating surfaces as clean as you possibly can. let no oil or fluid get back on there. Place gasket on (most don't recommend adding sealant or gasket compound). Put pan on with all bolts fingertight. Then starting from center outward, start tightening them down to torque specs-it'd be pretty light torque, like around 20 ft-lbs-might want to ask a ford mech. what torque specs are. When done, refill ****** and check for leaks after running car.
The specs that i have is 11 foot pounds, start by hand tightening the bolts and then torgue them in a clock wise fashion starting from the center
ex. 8 4 1 5 9
7 3 2 6 10
#1 Heat up engine to make oil flow better
#2 Put car up on jack stand or ramps
#3 Place pan under engine and remove filter being careful not to burn yourself
#4 Remove oil plug from bottom of oil pan carefuly because oil is hot.
#5 Oil rubber gasket on filter and install filter and oil plug
#6 fill with recommended type and amount of oil
Torque on the oil pan bolts is 18 lb/ft. Tighten in a criss cross pattern slowly tightening the bolts down making multiple passes until you have them torqued.
