Question about 1998 Hyundai Elantra
I bought the car yesterday from the owner, and after getting home I locked the doors. But, when I tried to unlock them, the key I have won't unlock them. And I don't have his number (I had a blond moment and deleted the number). Do I need a different key to unlock the doors?
No, the key should have buttons and that opens and locks the door.
If the key has no buttons, it is a Valet Key which usually doesn't start the car as it has no chip. There are also Emergency keys which are flat in a case and do have the chips to start.
The other possibility is that the battery is flat.
There is a battery in the key fob. Does an LED light up when you press the button.
You should have at least two keys with the car.

There is a "bar" that attaches to the lock like a lever pulling and pushing the door. Over many years and hundreds of unlockings it breaks from the plastic...I am in the same boat. It won't cost that much....take it to the dealer..the part is around $13.00 to replace

there is a short or a signal from the un-locking switch that is triggering your locks.
you have a switch manually to lock and un-lock your doors, the unlocking circuit is making contact.
you can try playing with your switch to un-short the switch or open it up ang check it.
tnx 4 using fixya,

It wouldn't be the car battery, but since you just purchased the car, the dealership should correct the problem. Bring it to their attention right away. Did you get any kind of warranty? Most dealers have at least a 30 day warranty for things like this.

Apparently the "LOCK" function is working normally because the burglar alarm is being activated when you 'lock' the car. Is this right?
The fact the engine won't start when the burglar alarm is activated is NORMAL If the doors will not UNLOCK front the driver's door manual switch, I believe you have a bad DOOR UNLOCK relay in the control module.

The solution is to pull out the back seat to get into the trunk. There are two bolts holding the bottom part of back seat (bolts located between bottom and top sections). Then pull out bottom section of back seat and you see the hinge for the top section, remove the bolts and then you can lift up and access the trunk. It's not that hard.
