Ok so i just replaced my transmission in my 2000 vw golf. I got the trans from a junk yard (84K miles), and made sure that the trans code matched. For precautionary purposes, i decided to change the transmission fluid and filter. I added 3.5 quarts, put it all together and took it for a test run. The transmission appears to only drive in one gear. If 1st, stays in first... Understable, but in 2nd 3rd and drive it doesn't appear to shift at all. It just revs up, and no shift. I can only hit 50mph in drive and the tac will reach about 3500 rpms. Could this be a fluid problem, or a electrical problem?? i did notice that the check engine light is on also. so i am hoping its electrical and not a bad trans.
So I thought I would update to hopefully help someone else in the future... The inability for the transmission to shift was completely understandable. For some reason the "brain" of the comp did not recognize the new transmission. Kinda like I was having a heart transplant, and my body wanted to reject it. It didn't shift because it was running in a safe mode. So, all that had to happen was the VW dealership put it on the computer cleared out the error msgs, made sure all my connectors were secure and wa-la. Shifts great. Trans fluid was a little low, so they added some. Not sure how much though.

The 01M and 09A automatic transmissions do not have a dipstick and
procedure requires measuring and maintaining a specified ATF
temperature (which is neither cold or hot, but in between) during the
ATF level checking. Special Volkswagen tools are required for this
operation and it is therefore recommended that ATF level checking on
01M/09A transmissions be left to an authorized VW dealer.
It's called Coding for new or replaced eqipment. VAG1552 or VAG5052 scan tool will code the new equipment, set it up and adopt it to the ECU of your vehicle.

If have had this problem many times on Mk4 vw golf.
The transmission oil must be fully drained, frop the gearbox sump and replace the filter kit (widley available). Make sure everything is really clean, especially the oil pickup pipe and screen.
I generally measure the oil removed and refill the same amount. you must use the correct transmission oil....so check. I think its dextron3 or similar..but all stockists will have a listing for it.
There is no dipstick , the only way to test is using a scanner or trial and error ( i do not recommend the latter).
Chech vw forums for diagrams showing the drain plug on the sump...you never get all the oil out due to height of the neck and the fact that the torque convertor and oil coolers still have oil in them.
good luck
Roger
check transmission fluid and notice color if dark red or maroon a trans mission fluid and filter change is in order/everybody changes the oil/filter but not transmission fluid and filter this is working 10 more and hard than the engine!/sorry when off ! sound like no overdrive concern could be stuck valve onside trans (please note when pan is dropped a little metal is normal chucks is not)good luck!
THE 5 SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION At the bottom of the automatic gearbox (tiptronic) you will find one threaded plug on below surface, (follow red arrow in the picture below). This is for emptying.
The oil level threaded plug is placed on the car front lateral automatic gearbox surface, (follow yellow arrow in the picture below).
The filling oil plug is placed on the upper automatic gearbox surface, (follow green arrow in the picture below).
Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) checking: 1. Requirements for check: 1.1. Vehicle standing on level surface. 1.2. Transmission must not be in fail-safe mode. 1.3. Shift lever in "P" position, parking brake applied. 1.4. Engine idling. 1.5. Air Conditioner and heater OFF. 1.6. ATF temperature must not exceed 104 Fahrenheit degree (40 Celsius degree) at start of test. 1.7. Automatic gearbox oil capacity: 2,5 liter. Only ATF with VW designation may be used. Do not use any lubricant additives. 1.8. Automatic Transmission Fluid ATF - part number: VW G 052 990 A2 1.9. An ATF level check when transmission oil temperature is too low results in overfilling, when too high results in underfilling. 2. CAUTION: Too much or too little ATF will affect the operation of the transmission. The ATF level must be checked at regular intervals.
I am a VW pro! Do you mean it wont change gears? A lot of VW's are having this same problem. One of three things could be the cause. Sensor on trans, trans control module, or the valve body in the transmission. When VW first made these cars, the transmission fluid was "suppose" to be lifetime fluid. These transmissions are sealed and have no dipstick. There is however a red plug right bellow the starter. You can open that cap and remove the plug under it. "Pull straight up while giving a slight turn". If you have a "clean" clear tube from maybe a fish air pump, you can slide that down the tube and pull it back out. you can smell it to see if it is burnt. The fluid is actually a type of mineral oil and CAN NOT BE MIXED with any other type of fluid! If the fluid is black, it will need replaced! The fluid should be changed every 50,000 miles part number G052162A2. Odds are, you will need to change the valve body inside the transmission
It winds up in 1st and then shifts right from 1st into 3rd. Then never shifts into 4th. Plus rev is gone. You broke the sun shell. The transmission will need to rebuilt or replaced.
VW Automatic transmissions must be filled within a specific level or they will not shift. Also, must have VW special transmission fluid or ATF +4 FULL SYNTHETIC!!! Required to create proper internal pressure...
Does it happen after you drive it? make sure the clutch assy. is not getting hot. If it is make sure to remove you foot form the clutch pedal just a little pressure can make the clutch slip. And heat will not let the clutch assy. to work right. If it is not getting hot check the shifting cables and the bushings on the transmission
