Question about 2001 Volkswagen Beetle
Try this: You will need 2 people - Have someone Spray Starting Fluid in the throttle then start the car and have someone spray the fluid continuously into the throttle. If the car continues to run you have a fuel problem, but if it stalls out, replace the coil pak. Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa!

My daughter has a 1999 VW Beetle with the 2.0L. She was ready to go to work yesterday after just driving her car the day before. The car would start and then 2-4 seconds later would die. I tried a number of times to keep it running. Giving it gas, Not giving it gas. It sounded very much like some of the responses I have heard where the immobilizer stopped the car. But after reading more the responses indicated that the 1999 did not have the immobilizer. I changed the fuel filter as a first guess what could be wrong. Fuel pressure was good. I read the response above about using starting fluid to see if the car would stay running. I disconnected the intake from the MAF and shot a spray of starter fluid into the intake when the car started to die out. Then to my surprise the car remained running. Long story short. If I disconnected the MAF sensor the car ran great. I connected it and it dies. I cleaned the MAF with MAF cleaner but did not help. I ordered a new MAF sensor today and will replace.
