This is an OBDI not OBDII vehicle. To get codes you have to short two terminals on the DLC connector and count the flashes. It's time to buy a manual. Nobody is going to sit here and list out where all the sensors are. That's a HUGE ask. Spend $20 on a manual dude.

SOURCE: i have a '97 chevy tahoe. the engine cranks, but

What you need to do is check for fuel pressure. The pressure should be 60-66 for central sequential fuel injection and 56-62 for sequential fuel injection. If pressure is good then check for spark at the spark plugs. If you don`t have a way to check for fuel pressure then tap on the gas tank bottom with your foot or hammer while someone is turning the key and trying to start the vehicle. If it starts then replace the fuel pump.If this is good then check coil and ignition module if you are not getting spark.Hope this helps.Good luck.

Overheated and wont start

Depending on the severity of the overheat, I would suspect the engine may be hydrolocked. I would remove the spark plugs and then try to crank engine. If will then crank over, coolant coolant may emerge from spark plug holes. In which case internal engine damage is likely. ie head gasket, or cracked head/block.

Car won't start and starter is only making clunking noise

You can take out the spark plugs, keep track of your spark plug wire order, try to crank it over see if the engine turns over.

Check voltage on your new battery, some need to charge when new.

check for corrosion on the battery and starter cables.

Checked oil. it was 1 to 2 quarts low. no idea for how long. seems as though the top of the engine makes a slight tap or clacking sound when accelerating. what is the least that the problem could be. and...

It sounds like bearing noise to me. you ran it to low on oil and ran a bearing dry. you can try a thicker oil. if it doesnt go away your gonna need a motor job.

Grand cherokee 1999

1. is the engine turning over. If it is then you probably have a timing/fuel problem.

2. If all you get is a click sound and no engine turn over then flat battery could be a starting point.

3.if it starts and runs rough plugs and or plug leads may need looking at. Or maybe fuel injection system.

4.Not enough information to get more specific.
