There is a sensor in the seat that senses someone in the seat. It might be bad or have a loose connection
Not sure about the '97, but there is no weight sensor on the seat of my '99 Sunfire. The only wires run to the seatbelt latch, and provide an open or closed circuit depending on whether the belt is buckled. The light on mine stays on whether the seat belt is buckled or not, and whether the circuit is open or closed, so it must be something else. I guess I'll cover the light with a black sticker until I need to disassemble the dash for a more important reason than just removing the seatbelt warning light bulb!
