Coolant fans not coming on when or AC turned on 2000 new beetle gls 2.0 Car runs for about 10 minutes and gets to operating temperature. Overheat warning light flashing red. Cooling fans do not come on. new coolant reservoir installed new fan control module under battery installed new thermostat installed. While there, looked for plastic impeller problem seemed good upper and lower radiator hose were hot and felt like coolant flowing tested drivers side passenger fan with direct hookup to battery it ran tested the water pump by pulling hose on upper reservoir and it had good stream at idle no leaks also tried bypassing the sensor on the radiator on the 3 wire plug that connects to the fan control sensor. Anyones best guess where to go from here Left to try switch/sensor on radiator fan control switch I bypassed but not sure I did it right fan relay under dash 2 wire switch under the intake manifold engine control management sensor green plug on upper radiator hose Does not come on when ac switch is turned on in car either. Believe it is supposed to IDEAS

Hi and welcome to FixYa,
Offhand, your described condition indicates a sticking thermostat, that is there is considerable delay before the thermostat opens. It is also possible that there is some restriction wherein the thermostat is not opening completely when the triggering temperature has been reached. As a test and to confirm, you could try temporarily removing the thermostat and operate the engine without one; observe temperature. The side effect of this test is that it would take some time to warm-up the engine, but operationally should not cause anything untoward. Of course, care has to be exercised that the gasket would still be intact.
Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

your fan is the problem...it's not turning fast enough to cool the engine off. I need more info on what type of fan you have....elec fan or a clutch fan?
SOURCE: CAR HAS NO AC AND WILL OVERHEAT
Definitely get the fan problem fixed. I had an older Saturn, and it would do that periodically. It turned out I had a bad battery terminal, it would short out from time to time, and if it did so while I was driving, the fan would cut out and therefore not cool the engine. While I was driving it was usually ok, because air could flow, but in traffic, or stopped, it would get pretty hot. I found that turning the heat on and letting it blow full blast would help it stay a little cooler, it'll just cook you inside the car.

have u bled the cooling system ?warm the car and cut the car off right before the fans come on ,let sit for 30-35 minutes, see if the coolant drops in res. if so repeat process untill coolant stops droping ,then drive car regularly if overheating stops ,but monitor it because it will drop somemore/there has been reports of new and rebuilt water pumps nt having correct propelar mounted on them/ backwards etc. if this helps let me know [email protected]
