Problem with 1987 BMW 7 Series 1987 BMW 735i, I just had the starter changed and now when I turn it over to start, it won't stop cranking. I had to remove the key from the ignition to get it to stop, subsequently it flooded. Could this be a bad solenoid in the starter that was installed?

hi remarkable08;
When you turn the key to start, you should have 12 volts at the small terminal on the starter solenoid.
If you have 12 volts but no cranking the solenoid is not working. If you do not have any voltage on this
terminal there is a problem in the ignition key wiring. If you have no way to measure the voltage, your best bet is to remove the starter and solenoid, take it to an Auto Zone type store and have them check it for you. When you go to remove the starter, be sure to disconnect the ground lead on your battery first.
Hope this helps. Good luck Loringh PS Please leave a rating for me if appropriate. Thanks

All the alternator does is charge your battery. If the battery is good, like you say, and the battery cables and connections are clean and tight, then it probably is the starter. If it doesn't start with a boost either, then you know it's the starter. If it does start with a boost, then your battery is no good, and that could be because of a problem with your alternater. If you don't have an amp guage on your car, any garage will have one, and be able to test your alternator in a few seconds.

Get a DTC scanner and see what it says...in the meantime, check that fuel pump relay and fuel pump. The humming sound is probably the heater blower motor or part of the HVAC system winding down after disconnecting from power.

I had the same problem, after having the car towed to four Seasons, it was discovered that the electrical portion of the ignition switch was defective. Works like a charm. Part number 61 32 8 356 026 Hope this will help.
