Sounds like your relay under the bonnet has gone im fraid, not too hard to change. if this is not the cause then the problem might be a little more difficult to sort out as this will prob be the power steering motor and is a bit of a swine to change.

if this is just a simple relay then i would say back street joe as they only cost about 4-5 GBP. if its a pump then prob same but as i say these are a little more expensive and a lot harder to do yourself. so overall unless its to do with your full service history or you have more money than you know what to do with then yeah local guy all day. also very useful to shop around and use dealers prices against each other especially as we are in critical financial crisis. hope this helps ya?

Why would my steering wheel lock up when i was backing up?

Check your power steering fluid to see if it is low. Also look to see if it looks like the belt is slipping. You may have a power steering pump that is failing.

Vw fox 06 my headlights flicker when i move the wheel why?

Do they just dim a bit? If so, you're probably noticing the reduction in voltage from the engine belt being asked to drive the power steering pump. The engine belt also turns the alternator, which isn't getting as much power from the belt that's now doing 2 jobs. You don't notice this when you're driving because the engine RPMs are higher and the voltage from the alternator is constant. When you're stopped the engine RPMs will drop a bit and so does the voltage available for the lights. You can test this by revving the engine when you are stopped (be sure you are in neutral) and turning the wheel. You shouldn't see the light's flicker when you have the revs up. Let me know if that was the issue.

If you lost power steering, then the engine stopped, you probably lost your belt, which drives both your alternator and your power steering pump. Lift the hood and look at the pulleys and see if the belt is on them.
If the engine stopped running, then you lost power steering, I can't be sure.

It sounds like you have a fan belt slipping Check the condition of your belt,or belts. If the belt appears old, and weather cracked, it should be replaced. If the belt is slipping, you would temporarity lose power steering, and the water pump would stop pumping coolant causing the engine to overheat.

My 1998 Toyota Corolla is having an issue with the steering - starting yesterday, when turned to the left or right an audible grinding noise could be heard and felt - there was also resistance, to the...

The noise you are hearing and feeling is very likely due to a low fluid level. I'd suggest you start by filling the power steering reservoir to the correct level with the correct fluid. Cycle the steering from lock to lock a few times to see if the noise gets better or goes away completely. Monitor the fluid level to determine how quickly the fluid leaks out and also to see if you can tell where the leak is coming from.

Be aware though that the longer you drive the car with a low fluid level condition, the more damage you will cause and the more expensive the repair will be.
