When accelerating, transmission skips right through 3rd gear. When downshifting, skips 3rd and goes right to 2nd, but upon speeding up again, skips right through 3rd as usual. Interestingly enough, transmission will sometimes downshift from 4th to 3rd when going up a hill. But overall the car basically never uses 3rd gear, and if you apply the accelerator in 3rd, will immediately shift out of it, either into 2nd or 4th.
Before trying to figure out if it is the computer etc. From a dead stop.try going though the shifts using your manual shift lever, run the gears through their normal rpm shift cycles And manually shift to the next gear and see if the third gear acts normal through it's cycle if it does then you will know it isn't the transmissions gear and is a problem the the shifting procedure mechanism..have check from there...Hope this helps. Good luck
Check the transmission computer
SOURCE: The transmission is hanging up in 2nd gear and not
The absence of 3rd and 4th is imposed by the transmission computer as a precautionary measure. The system has detected fault and rather than risk doing any greater damage has provided a limp home service. It needs to have a transmission specialist look it over and read the error codes. How do your transmission fluid levels look?
SOURCE: Hang up in third gear loss of power
Hi All
I have a s40 1.9d / 2000 plate,
In the last month or so the car loses revs when changing up to 3rd and 4th gear, I can only get 50 mph max in 3rd gear 80mp in 4th.
The car has just clocked 185,000 miles
Its a great car but a pai at the moment, I've had a service including fuel fillter change added fuel cleaners to the deilsel all to no avail
Any suggestions

Has anyone change the transmission fluid and used anything other than Honda ATF-Z1. If so, have the fluid/filter changed in this car and use only Honda Fluid. This is the only fluid that you can use in a Honda. Even if you have used the correct fluid an fluid/filter change may help. If that is not the case then I suggest you seek out a trusted professional.
SOURCE: car doesn't have power, bad acceleration
I think I would start by replacing the fuel filter if you haven't already.
SOURCE: jerking sensation when automatic transmission is shifting gears and downshifting
it sounds like a mass air flow sensor. let me know if this helps
