Loud squealing whenever I start the van' it is getting very poor gas mileage, and has a loud noise from driver sideish when I get to 40 MPH or if has been driving awhile. The loud noise happens every time I drive now for about a week. The noise reminds me of a train after it gets going, the sound of the wheels rubbing on the tracks as it slows and speeds up..That is how it is with the van, the noise will first occur when it warms up and and I've hit about 40mph and will slow down as the van slows down, and then noise will stop until I begin accelerating again and decrease again with my speed. My rpm's seem fine and I don't have any problems with starting or turning off the van-( like the engine making the noise if its been idling high nd then when you turn the key off it kinda goes "koosh" like its tired) There is nothing leaking on the ground after its sat and like I mentioned the squel whenever I start it up. I tried hooking it up to diagnostic but came back that the van's computer was not registering like it didn't work. The only other thing to mention is that the check engine light has came on and stayed on for two weeks now....I've been told the throttle positioning switch may be the problem, does this sound right to you??
Sounds to me the coming and going of the noise when going and stopping is a wheel bearing. Change bearings on both sides. Also change the belts. Poor gas milage. Put sparkplug in it. For this will help with fuel milage. Thanks have blessed day.
As I look at your letter, which is very good, I might add, here are the few things that occurred to me.
The "loud squealing" should be a belt.
You have one or several belts, and if they get loose, or are worn out ( that includes the belt rubber getting old and hard) they will squeal like that.
However, the squealing also may be coming from one of the pulleys the drive belt or belts are attempting to turn.
If you have a bad bearing in one of the pulleys, you can get that loud sound like " a train".
If you are really careful, a "mechanic's stethoscope" might help you.
That is to take a really long screwdriver, and put the tip on each of the pumps or base of each pulley, and the handle end to your ear, and you can hear the bad bearing "scream" with the engine running.
Be blessed.

remove the front 02sensor and drive the car like that, remove means complety take it apart from exaust, if problem goes away or gets so much better then your catalitic converter at the exaust is restricted and need a new one

had the same problem it was the u joints....if you get a vibration at higher speeds that will also be an indicater...on the 2005 exterras you have to replace the whole drive cshaft fortunatly min was under drive train warranty.

We are having the same problem. We are right now changing the crankshaft position sensor along with the intake and manifold gaskets.

I really think it's the TPS, (throttle positioning sensor) on the throttle body. When this sensor is defective or out of position the vehicle will idle like that and even stall. If you haven't had it scanned, you should do so, that will probably tell you the problem.

Could be the bearings in your alternator have gone dry and your alternator is about to quit out on you. I had a friend with an 01 altima and we could always hear him coming before we saw him because of this very problem. Changed the alternator out and noise went away. Thanks for using FixYa!
