My 01 eclipse will not turn over. i had been driving it all day starting and stoping at several locations with no problems, and then it failed to engauge the starter. the battery is good, the cables are tight, the fuses are good. where should i look next. all of the lights and buzzers come on but the engine will not crank. we pull it and droped the clutch with the car in second gear and it started and ran fine, but it still will not crank after i got home.

Use a meter and test the battery --starter and ignition switch --looking and hand checking is not enough

Things to check are the clutch safety switch and the start relay. Use a volt/ohmmeter to interrogate the relay socket. From there, you can see if the signal is getting past the clutch switch. You can also start the car from the relay socket, if the downstream circuit is good. Make sure the car is in neutral before getting into the relay socket.

SOURCE: my car won't turn over

does this car have a safety device that won't let you start the engine unless the clutch is pushed in???
if so that little switch on the clutch pedal could be faulty.

SOURCE: 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GT Won't Start?

Could very well be a security system failure telling the computer that the vehicle is being stolen. I had the same issue with my jeep and there was a wire i had to ground out to bypass the alarm system. look into that

SOURCE: my 2000 eclipse wont start up all the way

I have the same problem on my 2002 Eclipse RS 2.4l 4 cylinder. Replaced the battery, starter, fuel pump(not at one time) . It started up when I had the starter put on as well the fuel pump. But everytime I started the car up it ran good till I turned it off the problem was still there. The car sounds like it wants to start but it sputters you can smell the gas so I know its getting fuel. it starts up fine with a cold start like in the morning.

Try getting a diagnostic thats what Im going to do next week.
good luck!!!

SOURCE: 1996 mitsubishi eclipse doesn't start when turning

check for voltage at the small start wire on the starter when cranking the engine--you will need someone help. If there is no voltage you may have a bad neutral safety switch ,which is on the trany shifter.you have an automatic trans i assume.
If so try putting in neutral when cranking.

the bank#1 cam position sensor has failed.this is located in the back of the cyl. head closest to fire wall.takes several attempts to start because lack of signal puts ecm in fail safe mode and it substitutes a value to get engine started.about a$100 for sensor and half hour to put it in.

My eclipse will start and then just die, like its gas is cut off

We just had this and it was a sensor called something like the CAM TIMING SENSOR - which gave the engine bad timing when it tried to get going. The car is great since we got it replaced - but it cost like $360 to get it all diagnosed and replaced.

2002 mitsubishi 6 cyl will start and run fine until you turn it off then it wont restart. now wont start at all. did this several times until it wont start at all. cam sensor??? or fule system problem?

The most neglected part in this system is the battery. Have your battery tested for retaining the charge, some of the cells can fail and your battery will not retain the charge, even after a long drive.

Try starting it with a booster battery, if your problem disappears, you just need a new one.

Hope this helps.

Starting problems

many times when a fuel pump starts to fail it fails intermittenly and then it just wont work at all. so it may be your fuel pump. because it still cranks strong then it's not the battery. it may also be loose wireing to and from your distributer. that could explain why it works intermittently. when the wire barely connect it works and as you drive they my loose contact. make sure all the connections to and from the distributer are not loose. you may need to change those cables as well.
