Service Brake message

I am getting a "Service Brake, visit workshop" message on my 2004 E500. Any ideas on what the likely fault is?

  • Anonymous Mar 03, 2009

Just as an update on this. The solution from Gator was shared by the Mercedes mechanics who checked the brake pads and disks. However, the actual cause was that I had my battery changed last week because the old one was not holding a charge and this sent an error message from the SBC brake system which relies on good voltage. The message should have been cleared by the mechanic who changed the battery but since it wasn't cleared has continued to come up because as a safety warning it has to be manually cleared.

10/10 for my Mercedes dealer though as they did the diagnosis and reset the fault meory for free.

Hello, You probably have brake pads that are worn down to the sensors. You will need to take it to whomever does your repairs. It could be either the front or rear pads or both.

If you find this info to be correct, please enter a (fixya) rating

The dashboard in my 2004 e500 says vist workshop! what does this mean?

That is the same as a Check Engine Light. You are either over due for an Oil and Air Filter change or a sensor is going bad. If your in the United states go to one of the Major Auto Parts stores and ask them to connect their code reader to the vehicle and identify the fault code and that will tell you what is wrong.

Mercedes Benz C180 Fault Message Brake Assist.Visit Workshop BAS

Hi there

BAS is the Brake Assist System and if there is a malfunction it would only come into play in an Emergency stop while applying full pressure. BAS applies full braking force because people tend to lighten up their pressure on the pedal in these situations. I would suggest that the best thing to do is go to a Workshop or Service Center and have it checked out. Please remember to put a good rating on my profile.

Kind regards
