If you removed the positive cable and solenoid wires. look for a bracket. some times starter has a bracket holding it in.

I have a 2002 gmc sonoma need to replace clutch how do i take transmission out.

Not too big of a deal. Disconnect battery.
Remove driveshaft from vehicle. Disconnect any electrical wiring from transmission. Remove starter. Remove gear shifter. Support transmission on a transmission jack, or a good sturdy floor jack. Remove rear transmission mount, and crossmember. Lower transmission slightly to help gain access to the engine-to-trans bolts. Unbolt slave cylinder and hang it out of the way. Remove engine-to-transmission bolts, and bouncer bars (if equipped) Slowly pull transmission away from engine. If it's stuck, double-check to make sure all the bolts are out, then try raising or lowering the trans a bit with the jack and/or pry in between with a pry bar to help break it loose. Remove transmission from vehicle. DON'T lose the dowel pins! They are needed to line up the engine to the trans properly. Remove clutch pressure plate from flywheel, and remove pressure plate, and clutch plate. If the rear main seal is leaking (behind flywheel) NOW is the time to change it (cheap $10 part) Installation is in reverse of removal. Good luck!!

Replacing starter for gmc sonoma

You will need to remove the motor mounts and jack up the engine and remove the passenger side tire to be able to get it out. the starter is only 2 bolts. Not hard just time consuming. Disconnect the battery before starting the process. The bolts on the starter are easily accessable you will have to raise engine to be able to get it out.

How to change a starter on a 4.3 gmc sonoma 1997

STARTER REPLACEMENT ( 1995-97 4.3L MODELS )

ad8746e.jpg

Fig.: The starter motor on later model 4.3L engines is retained by two long bolts
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and support the front of the truck safely using jackstands.
  3. If necessary for access, disconnect the front exhaust pipe.
  4. If equipped, remove the starter heat shield.
  5. On the 2.2L engine, remove the brace rod from the front of the engine and the bell housing.
  6. On 2.2L engines, remove the drivers side wheel to access the starter motor wires and the starter motor attaching bracket-to-engine bolt through the opening in the wheel well.
  7. Disengage the wires from the starter solenoid.
  8. On the 2.2L engine, remove the attaching bracket-to-engine mount bolt.
  9. Remove the starter-to-engine block bolts. When removing the last bolt, be sure to support the starter to keep it from falling and possibly injuring you.
  10. Carefully lower the starter and shims (if equipped) from the vehicle.
  11. If necessary, remove the bracket (2.2L engine) or the shield (4.3L engine) from the starter assembly.

To install:
  1. If removed, install the bracket or shield to the starter, as applicable. Tighten the bracket nuts to 97 inch lbs. (11 Nm) or the shield nuts to 106 inch lbs. (12 Nm).
  2. Carefully raise the starter and shims (if equipped) into position in the vehicle and thread one of the retaining bolts to hold it in position.
  3. On the 2.2L engine, loosely install the bracket-to-engine mount bolt.
  4. Install the remaining starter mounting bolt, then tighten all mounting fasteners to 32 ft. lbs. (43 Nm).
  5. Engage the wiring to the solenoid as noted during removal.
  6. On the 2.2L engine, install the brace rod and tighten the retainers.
  7. If disconnected for access, install the front exhaust pipe and tighten the fasteners.
  8. If equipped, install the starter heat shield.
  9. On 2.2L engines, install the drivers side wheel.
  10. Remove the jackstands and carefully lower the truck.
  11. Connect the negative battery cable.

Hope this help (remember rated this help) Good luck.

2.2L Engine remove protective shields as needed then remove front exhaust pipe. Remove the brace from the engine to the clutch housing, then disconnect starter wiring. 4.3L Engine 2 wheel drive just remove the right front tire and you will have access to the wiring. 4.3L Engine 4 wheel drive you must remove the differential carrier shield if equipped then remove the starter bolts and rotate the starter to get access to the wiring. CHANGING STARTER ON 94 SONOMA

Hi Terrie- You can go to '94 GMC Somoma Repair' and there are numerous sites. But I think you have to remove the 4 prong wire (may have to wait for entire unit before removing red lead?) and crossmember (only 4 bolts?) and/or then loosen 1 bolt then remove other-thenstand it up and turn around before you slide out and down. Not that big-o-deal but it helps to know before you go in(you can call |GMC and ask Service Dept. Good luck and God bless

It's easy, 2 9/16 bolts, remember to disconnect battery and make a note of the wiring on the starter.
