2002 cadillac deville skips

I can crank my car and let it warm up then it starts idiling up and down some times it cuts off but cranks back up it says system not charging

    I am having the same problem with my '02 Deville...the car runs great while driving but when idiling the RPM's frequently goes back & forth from approx. 650 to approx 400. The RPM's dropped so low a few days ago that a notice came on that the battery was not charging...but that just lasted a few moments & then the RPM's went back up to normal. My service engine light has also come on.

If it says system not charging, the alternator is not working correctly. It starts with the battery but, when running, the alternator recharges the battery from cranking as well as keeps everything else working. Since the alternator isn't putting out enough power, it shows a fault.
