It has a hydraboost brake booster right? Sounds like a bad Power steering pump. The belt is still on it right?

Check the belt and the fluid level in the power steering

  • Anonymous Mar 01, 2009

No, if there is fluid in the pump, start the engine and take a pair of needle nose pliers and squeeze the return line. The pump should wine like you are holding the steering wheel at a turn stop. If it doesn't, replace the pump.

Yes the P/S could have a green tint to it. No, you don't have to bleed the brakes.

There is no pressure on the lines at the pump with the engine off. Yes you will need to fill it back up after changing the pump with either power steering fluid or transmission fluid.

1994 Chevrolet astro van awd

I think that van has "hydroboost" brake assist instead of vacuum powered assist. Hydroboost uses pressure from the power steering pump to assist the brakes. However, I am unsure where the problem is. It could be a leak in the hydroboost itself, a leak in the line, a bad pump, or as easy as low power steering fluid.

!996 Chevy Astro AWD pulls to the left when braking , I have replaced Both front calipers, rotors, and pads bled the brake lines and still it will pull to the left MOST OF THE TIME! when i least expect...

Check front end steering linkages for any play, as well as rear brakes for sticking or grabbing as well. Not unusual for a rear brake grabbing, to cause front end to want to wander.

I have a 1995 chevy astro van and the breaks and steering have lost power. The fluid's are full, and I can not detect any broken lines. What could it be?

Your van don't have the regular air (vacum) power brake booster, your has a hydraboost brake booster, which is power by your power steering pump, if power steering pump goes bad you will not have power steering or brakes, brake peddle will feel very hard and will take alot of pressure on the brake peddle to stop your van, more the likely your power steering pump is bad.

1995 chevy astro van

Mine just did same (2001). Have them check the power steering pump--shaft broke in mine. This affects the brakes as well since both power brakes and power steering run off same system in Astros. Broken shaft messed up the booster system.
