if you are somewhat mechanically inclined you should be able to follow these steps in order I put them. #1 Disconnect the negative battery terminal.#2 Disconnect the electrical terminals from the alternator.#3 Loosen the alternator adjustment and pivot bolts and remove the belt.#4 Remove the bolts and separate the alternator from the engine.#5 Remove the alternator bracket from engine.#6 Remove the fuel filter and any of the vacuum lines in the way.#7 Remove alternator from top of the car.#8 Installation is reverse of removal.

I had the same problem on a Rover. There was a leak in inlet manifold that was caussing the problem.
To verify, spray some sealant to temporarily seal the inlet manifold .and the eratic idling should disappear for some time.
If it does, you know there is leak in inlet manifold which you can take of and refit with a new gasket.

Sounds like it an outer cv joint on that side. They start making a ticking noise under load and it gets worse as time goes on. Have a shop look it.You'll need a pretty well stocked tool box if you want to do it yourself.

There is a warm up valve on the throttle body(should have 2 small coolant hoses). remove the valve and have someone start the car while you block the port to the valve on the intake. If that clears up the problem you can cut a piece of cardboard to mount in between the valve and intake.should straighten it out.
