There are a couple of possible answers, here...first check all cables and make sure they're clean and well connected. Follow the cable from the battery to the starter area...it should be connected to the selenoid. Again, make sure the connection is firm. Then check all fuses and replace any burned ones.

Ive got a Jetta 2 CSI and had the same trouble. I then discovered that my coldstart packed up, wich you cant even get at the agents anymore. So If you are in the Benoni area I can fix it for you for 'n reasonable price, and you won't have that trouble any longer. Mine is still starting by just touching the key. 0829484343

My Volkswagen Jetta won't start after disconnecting and re connecting the battery

The first link says you can disconnect the battery cables and touch the Pos and Neg leads together to discharge any stored charge in the system. I don't think that is good, it works on some cars and other cars it can short out electrical components. I think it is better to disconnect the battery and turn the key on and let it sit for more than 1 hour to reset the immobilizer. Just my thought.

I need help! I have a 1996 vw Jetta! Wont start and wont crank! Dash lights come on but when I turn the key nothing happens! What should I check?

I would check to see if you are getting power to the small wire on the starter solenoid when you turn the key to the starting postion. If you do, the starter is bad. If not, you probably have a bad ignition switch.
