Remove starter 2003 chev 1500 pickup 5.3 engine

ark your Chevy Avalanche on a level surface, activate the emergency brake and place blocks behind the back tires for safety. Disconnect the negative battery cable with a terminal puller. Raise the front end of the car with a jack for easier access to the starter.

  • 2 Remove the positive battery cable nut and the engine harness ground nut. Disconnect the positive battery cable and ground wire from the solenoid.
  • 3 Unscrew and remove the starter mounting bolts. Place all nuts and bolts in a safe place to prevent loss, such as a baby food jar.
  • 4 Detach the heat shield if necessary. Remove the starter from the vehicle.
  • 5 Take your malfunctioning starter to the parts store with you. Aftermarket distributors remanufacture most of the starters they sell, so you can likely obtain a partial credit toward your new starter by exchanging your old one. Be sure that you take care not to damage the starter in transit, because the better condition it is in, the more you can get for it.
  • 6 Purchase a replacement starter that has the same or higher cranking capacity (power rating) as the original starter. Also, match the bolt patterns, drive gears and electrical connections. Your owner's manual may list specifications or the auto parts technician will help you determine them. Download a free owner's manual by registering with the Chevy Owner Center (see Resources).
  • 7 Install the new starter motor by reversing the removal process. Tighten the heat shield nut to 44 inch pounds (five Nm) and the bolt to 35 inch pounds (three Nm).
  • 8 Torque the starter mounting bolts to 37 foot pounds (50 Nm). Tighten the ground wire retaining nut to 30 inch pounds (3.4 Nm) and the positive battery cable retaining nut to 80 inch pounds (nine Nm).
  • 9 Lower your Avalanche back to the ground. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Turn the key in the ignition to see if your new starter motor functions correctly.

#1 Try starting the car in Neutral, if no start replace the Park and Neutral safty switch. #2 Check for a faulty starter solenoid. #3 Check for a faulty stsrter motor. #4 Check for a faulty ignition switch. #5 Check for faulty starter Relays.#6 Check the Transmission Range sensor it could be out of adjustment or defective. #7 On 1998 and later models, the power relay is in the power distribution box in the engine compartment. Refer to your owners manual for more information on relay location. Good Luck From Ernie @ RedDeer, Alberta, Canada.

Hi, I am a chilean owner of Chevrolet Lumina LTZ

I've had the same problem. Change the starter solenoid in the steering column because if you don't, eventually it will not start at all. Right now, it is warning you.

How do you remove the starter on a 98 beetle 2.0????

Disconnect the negative battery cable with a terminal puller. Raise the front end of the car with a jack for easier access to the starter.
Consider removing the intake and exhaust manifolds on vehicles with a 010 automatic transaxle. This may provide better access to the starter motor. Place all nuts and bolts in a safe place to prevent loss, such as a baby food jar, because you will need them later.
Disconnect the electrical connections from the starter. If it might be difficult to remember where the wires attach, use masking tape and a permanent marker to label them before disconnecting.
Remove the bracket that secures the starter to the engine on 010 transaxle models.
Use a floor jack to support the weight of the engine, because the starter bolts also secure the front engine mount to the transaxle. Also support the weight of the starter. Remove the starter mounting bolts and pull the starter motor straight out from the transaxle to remove from the engine.
Take your malfunctioning starter to the parts store with you. Aftermarket distributors remanufacture most of the starters they sell, so you can likely obtain a partial credit toward your new starter by exchanging your old one. Be sure that you take care not to damage the starter in transit, because the better condition it is in, the more you can get for it
Purchase a replacement starter that has the same or higher cranking capacity (power rating) as the original starter. Also, match the bolt patterns, drive gears and electrical connections. Your owner's manual may list specifications or the auto parts technician will help you determine them. Purchase an owner's manual at Volkswagen of America (see Resources).
Reverse the removal process to install the new starter. Torque the mounting bolts to between 33 and 44 foot pounds (45 to 60 Nm), depending on the engine size. On engines with a 010 transaxle, tighten the mounting flange bolt to 15 foot pounds and the bracket bolt to 15 foot pounds
Lower your Beetle back to the ground. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Turn the key in the ignition to see if your new starter motor functions correctly.

I don't have an owners manual and my 2000 saab 9-3 tries to start but won't. Trying to save a tow bill.where's the starter. someone said u can tap on it.

The fact that the engine is turning over means it is not the starter. It's clearly working. Tapping it will do nothing for you.

When an engine won't start, it's indicative of not getting fuel or not getting spark at the cylinder.

Engine don't start and have a clicking sound

you should check and see the batttery smart visor indicator (if applicable - see owners manual)
this may be that the battery has been drained and does not have enough power to rotate the starter. lights, dashboard, instruments light up ok as the voltage is there but the power (amperage) is low. please refer to owners manual on how to recharge your battery. bare in mind that removing the baterry from the care will reset systems (audio, alarm) and you wil need to recode them by using the codes provided with the car.
