My 99 saturn sl will stalls after 5 minuts of running during idle or runing and I have to wait 5 hours before it starts again I have changed plugs wires pvc valve air filter and even disconnected battery then reconnect after an hour no results please help 2002 Saturn SL SOHC 1.9l, engine light on, checked code and it reads misfire in cylinder 1. Checked sparkplug, wires, timing, fuel injector and electrical for fuel injector, all check ok. I noticed carbon build up inside the intake manifold. Could this be a collapsed lifter? Strange is that there is no loss of power in all ranges, i can unplug the fuel injector and sparkplug wire and engine runs on as if nothing was unhooked. Yes you can here the misfire at idle but not at speed or during acceleration. I am sure cylinder compression is low but have not checked, Any ideas?
Your problem is most likey your intake gasket. They have a problems on the SOHC engines where the intake gasket shifts & starts leaking vacuum at the #1 intake runner causing a missfire on Cylinder #1.While the engine is Idling buy some throttle plate cleaner & spray throttle cleaner down at the #1 Intake runner where the intake meets the head.If engine stalls or runs rougher that's your problem.I have replaced dozens of those gaskets for tha reason!! They have a beter design gasket through saturn parts. It has a coating on it to prevent reoccurance. Also you should check you Coolant Temp Sensor,if it's ceramic it's most likely bad.Replacement is brass from saturn.Good Luck
Spray carb cleaner on the intake manifold near cylinder 1... common problem is the intake manifold gasket leaks vacuum causing a misfire...the not starting could be due to a faulty crank sensor
