Sounds like a range switch, I think I remember reading a service bulletin on this, check with gm or an independent garage

2003 Chevy Silverado 2500 duramax won't shift into park. It will go from reverse all through the gears into 1st I checked the linkage under the dash everything is connected.

Can park be selected by going under the vehicle and manually pushing the gear selector into the park position?
If so then cable adjustment is next.

2003 Chevy Avalanche won't start (incorrect gear indicator)

PRNDL Display
The instrument panel cluster (IPC) displays the selected gear position as determined by the powertrain control module (PCM). The IPC receives a class 2 message from the PCM indicating the gear position. The PRNDL display blanks if:
• The PCM detects a malfunction in the transmission range switch circuit.
• The IPC receives a class 2 message indicating the park position and the column park switch indicates a position other than park, open input.
• The IPC detects a loss of class 2 communications with the PCM.

Could be the transmission range sensor . Testing would need to be done , hooking up a scan tool ! Doing electrical testing etc...

Sounds like the PRNDL switch on the side of the transmission. Be sure and clear the code before trying to start after replacing it.
