Started car and started fine....Battery light came on day before but started up perfect, drove about five miles and noticed none of the gauges were working anymore, no radio, no lights on dash at all, and driving it back home very hard to shift and get home, but made it home. What could be the cause of this?

One solution could be the break/safety solenoid. Make sure that the break/safety solenoid is clicking. If it isn't clicking, the AT gear shift is not going to move. If the break/safety solenoid isn't working you can get around it by releasing the AT gear shift with a key on top of base of the steering wheel, but (WARNING) you will have no break lights. I repeat NO BREAK LIGHTS.

either your alternator has gone or your fan belt is not there which helps the alternator to charge the battery get a volt meter on your alternator to see if it is kicking out what it should be

the battery says 12 volts but may be dropping to 4 or 5 under a load...i would suggest jumpstarting the car and see what happens.the battery should read in the high 12 volts and not less than 9.5 under cranking. the dash lights go out on your car when starting, and the alarm will go off ,and disable the ignition if the voltage is too low in cranking the car because the computer will shut it down and activate the anti theft.....check your battery posts are tight. best of luck
