If timing chain has failed, the engine will usually turn over faster than normal (first clue) You can also check distributor rotor to see if while cranking it turns normally and does not "stutter". Additionally compression will be very low. Not knowing which engine you have, I'd suggest you check the basics...fuel, spark etc, to make sure your'e not randomly guessing at the problem. A computer code check would not be a bad idea either!
