The lockup converter will only drop the engine speed about
500 rpm.Sure it gets to 3 rd gear?
If there is no lockup ,could be brake lite switch, lockup solonid,
ECM,or the converter itself.

SOURCE: P0743 torque converter clutch circuit

If the converter clutch does not lock at all it may be a problem with the ECM, or some problem with the emissions or sensors have the ECM "out of loop". (in which case the "Check Engine" appears) If the converter clutch is hanging engaged, killing the engine at stops, that is more likely a problem with a solenoid valve in the transaxle. You will need to consult a manual covering the transaxle for the location of the solenoid.

It could be failing clutch packs or a failing torque converter. I had a TH350 that whined after upshifting to 3rd, then it quit. For me it was the torque converter. It took out the entire transmission, including the oil pump.

I have a 2001 Ford escape xls 4x4 2.0 4cylinder and when driving down interstate at 75 mph in 5th gear my rpms are running at 3500. Is this normal or what would be causing this? It sounds like it needs a...

That is a typical RPM at that speed for most 6-speed 4 cylinder engines. The reason for this is that they have a much lower power output at lower RPMs (due to lack of torque), and the engineers want for you to have SOME acceleration to get up little hills.

Car is chugging a little bit at 45mph

The first thing that comes to my mind is "45 MPH"... and let me explain why.....

Your engine you said is running GREAT so a MPH is not going to effect the running of the Car but what happens @ 45 MPH you ask?

Your Torque Converter goes into Lock up.... If the Torque Converter is slipping in and out of lock up, you are going to have an irregular pulsating of the engine playing catch up.

you need to do this, try and drive the vehicle (you did not say what kind of vehicle it is), and drive it without the OVERDRIVE On...

So drive it and see if it is RPM RELATED. If there is no CHUG and you can go all the way to 55-60 without issue, Slow down below 45 and put the OD IN and accellerate and see what happens..

Is the Problem SPEED RELATED? Is it RPM Related?

If it does not happen with it OUT of OD, then what you probably have is a Torque Converter Failing...

I hope this helps

2000 pontiac grand prix rpms running 3 while doing 55

You have Transmission Issues that need to
be diagnosed

It most likey isn't going into converter lock-up

Could be a brake switch, torque converter solenoid
or any number of things

Shouldn't use it at all with any trans problem or
noticable increase in RPM

My 02 trailblazer jumps in rpm's while driving, typically when i am in crusie control over 55 mph.

Sounds like the torque converter is coming out of lockup. A technician with a highend scan tool should take it for a road test to diagnose the condition.

1998 Yukon high idle sound with bad gas mileage.

What you have is the torque converter clutch, cycling on and off.
When it is off.your rpm will go up and your milage will go down
First-check to see if your brake switch, on the back of the brake peddle, is loose or misadjusted. When you apply the brakes, the first thing to happen, is that you unlock the converter,so your trans is not connected directly to the motor,or you would stall. Then below 42 MPH,your trans is working off the converter, as a pressure multiplier ,based on rpm
Second- switch okey. You remove trans pan and change TCC Solenoid.

Let me know if if you need more guidance

most likely a clogged cataytic converter. Remove the 02 sensor. and drive; if better replace the catalytic converter and find out why it may of got clogged. Your prabably not in fuel control and are geting bad gas milage. You will melt the new cat if you dont find out why you melted the first. And sometimes they do fall aprt from age.

Shifts in and out of overdrive

This sound like you are feeling the transmissions torque converter going in and out of lock up. When the torque converter goes into lock up it feels like a shift . One way to tell if it is the converter you are feeling is to push the od button disabling overdrive and see if it still does it. The converter will still go into lock up .
